Why go for a 12gb model, you can get an old 40gb console for next to nothing. Download ure firmware onto a flash drive there is a specific location on a fat32 formatted flash it must be in, then you can buy a solid state hdd or any drive upto 750gb its gotto be 9.5mm not 12.5mm drive and install it. Yip there is a latch to the side, then one screw and the drive caddy pops out. Remember to remove the power cable for this. And put the drive in the caddy and slot it in. Then plug in the flash drive. Make sure your new firmware is newer than what was on there and follow the screen. It will take a while and then voila. A 750gb ps3.

I bought a 40gb from a guy wanting a 120gb. Silly huh. I put a 500gb in mine.

Let us know how long that old model will last you. The 12G will run with much less noise (fan sounds) than your 40G, and comes with a warranty.
