At the shops with only trees to give some shade, my wife always look for a tree to park underneath it. This leaves leafs on the car and bird poo. I stop anywhere safe, in the sun.

In the basement parking if that is available.
If there is no covered parking, I generally park a bit further away from the entrance/other cars to avoid the "tannies" with their woolies trolley who opens their car door into yours.
Usually I just look for a spot where there is a space open on both sides of my car.

Parking in the sun is probably more damaging than having to deal with leaves and bird poo.
No man, he means the area between the bonnet and the firewall, they accumulate there and promote rust.
