Hi guys

I would like to learn about linux, starting with downloading, installing and its basic usage and hopefully taking it from there. Having grown up only using microsoft, I am a complete noob when it comes to this.

I know there are different types of linux operating systems and would like to know which would be the best for someone like me to start of on. Also how would I go about installing this on my existing hard drive which runs windows. Hope MyBB can point me in the right direction.

Any other advice appreciated :)

Linux for dummies. <---- start there.

I am solo glad I started the other way around. 1st OS was on a Mainframe and Xenix(Microsoft Unix) on a PC. Learned DOS later on.

Download Linux Mint 13 or others like Ubuntu, Fedora etc
Install it in Virtualbox and play with it.
Once you have the hang of things repartition your hard drive and install it to the spare/free partition.

You should consider joining a Linux User Group. See if there are any in your area. Check out the culture of the group too - are they willing to assist new comers? Some groups might have a culture that is a little "hostile" to newbies but hang in there and you will get the help you looking for!

BTW Look for Ubuntu user groups in your area - the ubuntu culture more new user friendly.

Check your PM's. I sent you some study material.

Best way is to install a Linux distribution like rehat/fedora or slackware , I would go for Slax inside a VM

Reason, because Ubuntu dont know mint at all comes with software that does things for you automatically.
Like the synaptic package manger or Yum if it still even exist.

Once you have I.E slax going , Install software from source by compiling it using Gcc, you will soon realize that some of the packages that you are installing needs certain libraries installed , so you will end up going through a chain of missing libraries before you get your program to work.
That way you eventually end up learning how to use the command console and other applications.

If you really dont know anyhing about a linux distro, Look for a list of linux commands on google normally refereed to as a linux cheat sheet.

Recently a came across this, which i never even knew or rather bothered to look at.
