With the universities closed every other day and all the striking going on, where can one get teaching & training in programming these days? Private colleges, online courses, internships?

No. University is by far the best (And I would argue, only option).
If you can afford a good University in Europe or the USA, go for that. Otherwise, UCT or WITS.

Which is not to say that you can't succeed without a degree from a good University, but it makes a huge difference in your odds of succeeding

FirstbornMoose is planning on Applying at Potch, Uct and Stellies for next year....

The way things are panning out, I be getting pretty nervous....

Want to send her overseas to squat with the English HO's family and to further her education over there..... She ain't interested ....wants to stay in Africa.....

/Moose for some strange reason bursts into song....singing...."Hello Africa...tell me how you feel, hello Motherland......... as he wanders out his office....

Have you looked at private colleges

no im not interested in colleges i want to study at university

How about Udacity? They have some great resources but mostly paid. Have anyone studied from Udacity recently?

UNISA short courses are a great introduction to programming concepts. You can enroll for the programming ones and within a span of let's say two years start working in a very-junior position. You can do the computer science route at a UNI but I don't know how much of the knowledge is going to be industry relevant.

I think the UNISA short courses are great at getting you reasonably proficient quickly enough so you can start working and get the experience that is so completely crucial. The short courses are not going to replace the degree, you will still need one in the long term but at the very least they can give you access to a job that will feed yourself and give you an entry point into the profession.

I did the whole degree thing first and then the short courses and I must say I regret not doing it the other way around. It would have gotten me working much quicker and I do think it would have increased my passion for the work if I did not have to wait 3 years to start working. You need that first job ASAP.

I prefer pluralsight.
