Hi

So I have been weight training for a while and have been getting my protein intake from whole foods only but I have recently started a new Job and other commitments that won't allow me to make as much meals as I usually would have done. So I want to get a protein supplement for the occasional days I might not be able to meet my protein requirements. I friend of mine told me to only stick the ON, Muscle Tech and Myprotein and he said I should stay away from the local brands like nutritech, npl and PSN. So I was wondering is he right that the local brands are bad? Since there is a huge price difference between those international brands and the local ones. But I also don't want to consume junk. Any help or guide would be appreciated.

I am in a strength and muscle gaining phase.

If you have the budget go with ON.

They are all worthless in comparison with real food.

Just work in an extra chicken breast somewhere in your day.

I agree with ^. I have tried everything from Nutritech, Evox to ON.

The most important thing is what type of protein they use. Is it soy based, beef based, combo, isolate etc. Also if you are building mass you need a mass /weight gaining protein that has more grams of carbs. If you are cutting or shaping go with low carbs and high in whey.

Things to take into consideration
  1. Taste (very very very important) - for the first use go with something basic, i suggest either plain vanilla or choc. Dont try the more niche stuff like Creme Soda, Peanut Butter etc
  2. How easily it dissolves (good shaker helps)
  3. Rand / Protein per serving ratio
If you're on a budget try Nutritech. They are cheap and taste great, good amount of protein.

So what has been your experience with ON and nutritech. Also I won't be using whey that much. I will still try to reach my goals through whole foods.

My biggest and most noticeable improvements came when i used ON Gold standard. I liked the cookies and cream flavour. I also relied on the Futurelife Protein version ( dont get the normal futurelife) which has alot of great vitamins in, even more protein as well as Moducare to help with your recovery. Sometimes mixing the two or taking futurelife in the morning, Shake with lunch and shake after gym.

If you can reach your desired Macro Nutrient goals daily, and dont waste time in the gym you should be well on your way. Oh and lots of water, lots and lots and lots. You should get some fitness app that can track your caloric intake. Depending on if you are cutting or bulking you should aim for a caloric deficit for cutting and caloric surplus for bulking. But the exact amount is dependent on your routine, size, age etc.

Once your really hooked youre gonna want to get some form of pre workout. I gymed 6 days a week and eventually it starts to take its toll and your energy levels dont get there. I suggest Mr Hyde, The Curse or C4.

I dont gym anymore since i have moved and there is no gym close enough for me to consider it, but from my personal experience supplements are just that. Supplements to your already (supposed to be) diet. Successful gyming is something like 70% diet and 30% effort in the gym.

are you trying to lose or gain or get lean?

Anyway from personal experience ON gold standard is the best choice. All others I have tried either gave me no results or had too much carbs in it.
Nitrotech from muscle tech is also a great choice, a little more expensive but has everything you need for a lean muscle gain.
I don't know if there is any tests to actually measure and confirm the number of carbs and proteins in a supplement, if there was I would love to test these local brands. From what I heard they sell milk powder as protein supplement .

Oh yeah I am trying to gain muscle and strength. I am leaning towards ON.

I bought some ON gold standard last time dischem had a buy 2 get 1 free offer. They usually have those once every few months.

ON is the top notch brand and you definately getting the gold standard of whey proteins, however taking the price into consideration is it really 2.2x better for your muscle growth than the amount of whey nutritech you can get for that price? Can say certainly not

unless there are some lab tests to determine the actual amount of protein and carbs its hard to say. The nutritional information charts on most supplements claim to have around the same amount of protein and carbs.
My personal experience, ON whey gives you lean muscle growth than any other brands I have tried.
Which one do you use ??

I use Nutritech, previously was on Evox but they decided to get clever with their "special" whey and the price is just not worth it anymore. Occasionally do spoil myself with ON but the slightly higher quality of the whey doesnt justify the cost of the import.
