Well, I had my house broken into and my 42" stolen, along with other AV equipment.

I'm now due for a replacement and was thinking about the 55" LG 55LW6510 or the Samsung UA55C9000SR. Are there any other brands to consider?
I use it for my PS3 playing games and Blueray movies. I also have a DLNA server in the house so I Stream all my movies over the LAN.

I'm also now after a decent component setup for sound, but I'm rather clueless when it comes to amps/speakers.

Any help or a point in the right direction will be appreciated!

With that budget I'd import Panasonic Viera plasma. I'd be worried about problems associated with edge-lit LED-LCD like uneven lighting/light spots. Unless those you mentioned aren't edge-lit, and are the much better RGB LED-lit with local dimming ones (very good)...

But start looking here, Dion Wired sell some decent HTphile equipment...

If budget is tight (< R20K) you can go for the lower 100Hz LCD 55LK530 (vs 200Hz LED passive 3D 55LW6510).

Only bunch that advertise these large models online is http://www.fotodiscountworld.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/287_291/page/1/sort/7d. Should give you some idea of relative price diff between the two.

Both seem like great models, however LG's general drawback is poor black levels (even compared to other LCD/LED like Samsung).

Whatever you choose, make sure you get a 3D set.

Mu budget is about R40k, you know, a present from dad to dad!:D

Is 3D really worth all the hype? I've got 2 sons who watches a lot of DVD's if that helps.

For that price you may be able to squeeze in the top-of-the line Samsung Plasma PS64D8000, which is a seriously big-ass screen at 64".

Its the only-high end Plasma model Samsung SA bring in (after mid-range PSxxD550), probably for targeting the commerical displayboard market.

Also PS59D550 @ R19,995 at Dion Wired. Excellent value.

So you guys would recommend plasma over LED/LCD?
Both technologies have their individual pros & cons, but for large > 55" screens manufacturers currently put quite a price premium on the LEDs, so Plasmas tend to land up providing more for your money.

Does anybody have any experience with the LG 55LW6510 or the Samsung UA55C9000SR? I've read a few reviews and they are up there with the best.
What about the reflection from the plasma screen? I have 2 windows next to the wall unit, so I'm a bit worried about that.

Both Plasmas and LEDs are naturally quite reflective, however the high-end models you're looking at have advanced filters to minimise reflected glare to a minimum. You're going to have to go to some showrooms and scrutinise them yourself.

Both technologies are also not perfect. Plasmas are prone to varing degrees of image retention & buzzing ranging from unnoticable to pronounced if unlucky. Edge-lit LEDs are similarly prone to uneven lighting again ranging from unnoticable to pronounced if unlucky. Therefore best to buy locally in case you need to go through a swap out (or two), all depends on how fussy you are (for R40K I would be).

Yeah, that was my next step. Where would be a good place to start?

Ok, I've seen them all and test drove the lot of them. I've now settled on the Samsung 55D8000 LED TV.

The "store mode" they have the TV running on is horribly over saturated. I managed to get hold of the remote and changed some settings to make it more realistic. I did not notice any light bleed around the edges which was my main concern with edgelit LED TV's.

Again I see we are being screwed over with pricing. The same set goes for R16k in the States but we have to fork out nearly R50k....

So you displayed a black image in a dark room? Just checking since most shops are bright, reducing the chance of noticing bleed/spots...

Did you check out the higher end plasmas?
