Hi,
I am about to upgrade from dialup to ADSL and looking for a reliable ISP. Have been an iafrica subscriber for many years but as far as I can see, MWEB are amongst the most expensive providers. I emailed them and asked if they would drop their prices to keep me as a subscriber - not even an acknowledgement from them....!!
So far Axxess looks good to me however I would appreciate any comments/advice on the subject of whom to choose.
Many thanks

Hi JVO,

What size account are you gonna go for? Atm the 30gb accounts seem to be a good option and selling well, Axxess, Imaginet and WebAfrica all sell 30gb accounts at a reasonable price. Axxess seems to be the most popular atm as their service is really good, but check Imaginet and WebAfrica out they're the same price afaik. There are more, but im too tired to post them ._.

Hope this helps.

^^ what he said! :p

I'm personally with Axxess, and have been super impressed with the service I've received from them.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the time to reply !!
I will have a 512k line installed as soon as I can get Telkom to pull their fingers out and was originally going to try for a 10GB cap however I have never been on broadband before so not sure what my usage will be like. Will probably do the odd download or two or six and other than that just normal use. Do I need 30GB ??

The reason I was keen to hear from current users about which ISP they thought was good is I have never heard of any of these companies so wasn't sure whether the service they offer was going to be as good in reality.

Thanks again for the replies, much appreciated - Axxess seems to be my best bet so far.....

Now to hurry Telkom up !!!

Hmm, I heard though that on these 10,20,30gb accounts once your cap has been reached your internet is cut, no local or international. Please can somone clarify this? Based on that I think it would make more sense to get a 30gb account. If I were you I would think of getting either 20 or 30gb. Depending on how much you download.

Also keep in mind that Telkom will be capping local as of August, so try stay away from ANY contracts!

Hi Skint,

What do you mean by "Telkom will be capping local as of August" ? In the past has the cap been only for international sites ??

10GB cap is 333MB every day. That's quite a bit, isn't it ??

I see Axxess offer their service without any contracts - lloks good

Well, as of August once you're capped... your local is screwed as well as your international. Finer details haven't been given yet, like how big the local cap is going to be etc.

If you think 10GB is enough for you, then go for it ;)

Hi JVO, I have been with WebAfrica ever since they started the UUNet accounts. They have now switched over to SAIX 30GB accounts. I have never in my life seen customer service this good. I have phoned them at 3:15AM and the phone rang once and I was helped. They are also quite well priced. R570 for 30GB. The other good thing about them is that like Axxess they don't require a contract but what makes them special is that they don't require faxing in of anything, you can subscribe with a credit card.

Anyway just thaught I would give you some details on them.

BTW Axxess, Webafrica and AllyoucanEat are all very good. In the end it comes down to your preference.

Hi Angellus,

Thanks for the input. Just been looking around and Imaginet strike me as being professional - thanks for the other ISP's, will look into them as well, in particular WebAfrica sseing as how you recommend them highly.

Am a bit put off Axxess as the standard of basic English grammar and spelling on their site is disgusting - they really should get someone to proof their site....!!

Anyway, many thanks for your comments

Cheers

That's hardly a reason not to choose an ISP. But, whatever blows your hair back. I've only received quick responses from Axxess whenever I have dealt with them. I found their service to be the best in comparison with any other ISP I have used in the past.

When I was still with UUNet from Webafrica they even setup a free proxy to help the Users out because UUNet basically only allowed port 80 traffic. I would not push axxess asside simply because of spelling mistakes, sure it gives a poor impression but many users have rated the customer support quite high. I think it will come down to 2 things the tiny difference in price (think it is R10) and the fact that you can or can't use a credit card. I don't know if any of the other ISP's have setup fees but I know Webafrica don't. Any users from Axxess/AYCE/Imaginet have any info on setup fees?

[EDIT] Remember all the products are the same, so you are choosing the customer support you want.

I would definitely recommend WebAfrica ... my account was activated within 10 minutes after giving them my credit card details and no setup fee and filling in of various forms and faxing them.

I had a problem with my login that night with my new router and called their offices and somebody was actually there that late and sorted me out.

I like.

What time? I have been helped at 1:30AM and at around 3:15AM. AFAIK there is always someone there.

11pm ... did not expect it really since they seem to be a small operator.

Something that you might consider - although geographical boundaries are irrelevant in the context where we play, Axxess are located in PE. It's very much a 'domitory' town that needs every boost it can get - your little contribution to its turnover will help, even though infinitesmally small...

'domitory' town! I resemble that remark! ;)

Most interesting reading all these views. I know I shouldn't let spelling mistakes sway my choice, just leaves a very poor impression. A little more research to do but I like the look of Imaginet and WebAfrica.

Thanks for all the opinions, that is exactly what I was looking for !!

Cheers

*chortle* Yup, as a baainaar myself, me also resembles such references but very sadly true, when considering the focus put on JHB, CT and DBN by whatever initiative you can think of. That's actually the reason I opted for Axxess, besides me origins... ;)
