Which ADSL modem? Moving from MW 256k

Hey guys after much fighting I have decided to give up and I am moving over from MW 256 to ADSL. I want to game online agian and MW will never offer the kind of pings a fixed line service could. Just one question should I take the modem Telkom offer or should I buy one? If so which one. Thanks guys

I can say I have not had a days problem with my Zyzel ADSL Router. The Prestige 650 series offers auto-sensing between Full-rate and G.Lite standards according to the Central office switch or DSLAM. " Built-in PPPoE features save time by eliminating the need to install software." I'm using the Prestige 650R-31: ADSL Router over POTS. I was told that Communiverse sells these Routers. Perhaps you shold look into the same type of Router that has Wireless Features. This might be more "future proof."

A lot of people on these forums use DLink, but I can't comment on those.
I think the thing to do is avoid signing a 24 month contract with Telkom which includes their modem. Rather pay a few extra rands and get a decent modem/router with all the PPoe stuff onboard. You input the settings in the modem's firmware using your browser, like your password and username and you never have to install software on your PC. You won't beleive how nice it is never to setup a modem again.

I went on the budget search and I am using a Microcom Router/modem. Also built in PPoE software and is bridgeable too. Only cost R600. I would stay away from USB modems personally. Rather go the ethernet route.

i am partial to the netgears had not a moments trouble with them the backup and support are fine aswell ...

I went the budget way as Pr13sT , found the Planet AWE-3100 was a good buy. It has a built in PPoE software ,so lets say its "Plug & Play" to much features to mention.

just remember to get the settings from Telkom s well, some things must change like the VPI

I recomend You use the Telkom modem - far fewer headaches, personally I have a Netgear DG834G which includes a Wifi AP/firewall/4PSwitch, all very cool features & they all work But in my experience - rather go telkom. One feature that the telkom has that the advanced firewalls do not is the option of dialing in Using PPPOE straight (defeats the object of a firewall) but occasionally to test something you may want to.

as far as i know the DG834G supports PPPoE as do the rest of them ... i dont have the specs on hand right now ... but the smaller netgears i only have used PPPoE

Nope, even called Duxbury support to confirm, the Default DMZ setting is supposed to cater for this however it is still a NAT gateway.
