Which ADSL option? (provider and speed)

I know the answer to my question has probably been posted dozens of times, but I cant find a clear and concise answers.

so.. here goes.
I just moved to Hout Bay. Telkom came yesterday to install the landline and will be back in a few days to install the ADSL.

Do I use telkom as my ISP or find another? Would prefer not to be tied to a contract.

I do a lot of downloading at work (dont we all?) so don't really need an uncapped option but wont say no.
Most of my big downloads, updates will be done from work... but will probably like to download movies and shows from itunes occasionally.
Its just me and the wife at home - what speed would you gurus suggest?

I used Telkom when my ADSL was installed in Pretoria - average experience. Moved to Afrihost since and regret this decision due to their deteriorating service.

My view is that the quality of your ADSL also depends on the area of the installation i.e. how good is the Telkom exchange on the one side and how good is the various ISP infrastructure and SLA in that area on the other side.

I suggest you go with Telkom if prepaid at first and see how it goes. In the mean time ask around to determine how other ISP in your area compare and make your decision based on your experience with Telkom and these comparisons.

I would have said Axxess before the moved from IS to MTN. Their service though is still the best I have experienced.

Unlike a lot of people here I have had really bad experiences with Telkom and MWEB.

I am on the 1mg unlimited package with Telkom and must say I am pretty happy so far.

I also would've recommended Axxess, however on two occasions I've had dismal responses from them. What I liked about them was their ease of use. Take 5 GB and if you need more buy more online. Problem is, lately you can end up with no internet for a weekend as their so called 24/7 support is non existent. Anyone know of another ISP that operates similarly?

I say take the Telkom uncapped 2Meg package.

Start with Telkom as your ISP until any problems (hopefully none) are sorted only then start shopping around..

1Mbs 5GB capped - R412/mth http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/capped/all-access-5gb-standard/ is probably a good starting point to determine your requirements.

BTW: Telkom uncapped is pricey but worth it. I don't believe anyone has encountered the throttling mentioned in the Telkom Uncapped AUP, speed hassles are normally due to other issues which is why I recommend starting with a capped account to see what your line is capable of.

Currently on the 10Mbps Uncapped from Axxess for R460 pm I think, I usually get good average speeds of between 7 and 8Meg most of the time, so for that amount, I am happy.. until they throttle my download speeds. lol
What do u use it primarily for though?
