I have googled all over but can't seem to find what the correct settings ( or best settings ?) must be for the ADSL mode and Modulator parameters for Telkom in South Africa.

I use a Billion Bipac 7300 in bridged mode (as a modem) and have the following options for :
ADSL Mode ”Annex A”, ”Open Annex ,Annex L”, ”Annex M” and ”Annex J” - set as Open Annex Type: Follow DSLAM settings"

Modulator “AUTO”,”ADSL multimode”,”ADSL2”and”ADSL2+” - set as AUTO

The operational mode reports G.DMT. This works OK but the line drops every now and then.

Also, what are the acceptable figures for the line noise & attenuation?

My modem reports :
Noise Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
Noise Margin (Downstream) 11.0 db
Attenuation (Upstream) 31.5 db
Attenuation (Downstream) 44.0 db
Telkom will not give me a clear answer and only states that it is OK - by their "service standards" I guess!::rolleyes:

I am about 2 km away from the local Telkom exchange.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try forcing it to ADSL 1 mode with G.DMT and see if it improves

you can also try forcing the Coding Gain and TX levels. Check on Google for a hit on Whirlpool.net.au

Had a problem on several Billion routers where it does not detect the DSLAM settings correctly causing it not to connect for days on end and then all of a sudden it would connect.

I ain't a fan of Billion routers anymore..........
Netgear & Telkom routers gave no issues what so ever on the above line.

Let me guess, you have 384 ADSL?

In SA we mostly use Annex A, which is ADSL over Analogue line. Annex B for example is ADSL over ISDN (which we DO NOT have in SA).

Now I assume the others are over othe types of technologies, but typically you will be using Annex A.

As for the other setting, mostly we have G.DMT in SA, but sometimes you might have an exchange that uses a very new version of ADSL2+ and if your modem isn't updated with the latest firmware its possible it will work but you will sync at the wrong settings. This however is very dependant on the DSLAM at your exchange...

I have the same modem/router. Billion 7300RA. Mine only wants to work on Annex A and Auto - which it then selects as ADSL2+ under operational mode.  I am running the latest firmware (1.06g) as well.
Interesting

Thanks for the feedback. With Annex A and Auto selected I get ADSL G.Dmt, but then I am out in the country.

I am quite interested to hear what your values for the Noise Margins and Attenuation are?

I will post them here as soon as I get home tonight....... :)
