Which Airport Lounge?

I see Standard Bank has changed the criteria for Airport Lounge access, no wy I am going to spend R15-20k on my credit card for lounge access. Any idea which bank offers best lounge access ?

View attachment 1896424
Standard Bank sucks the worst with lounge accesses, and generally with all other travel benefits.

I moved to Nedbank Private Wealth and now I get unlimited Bidvest, Unlimited International (both for me and a guest), and then these additional locally

  • Mashonzha Lounge (OR Tambo)
  • Shongololo Lounge (OR Tambo)
  • Umphafa Lounge (King Shaka)

Seems like they hit you with an AI response...
So Basically with Diners Club (Standard Bank, you get 1 lounge access for each R7500 you spend, for their normal its 1 lounge access for each R10 000 you spend. If you want travel benefits, then standard Bank is NOT the option. Even their World Citizen card is totally crap.

Here is the link to Visa.co.za

Now if you have Visa Signature of Visa Infinite your benefits are drastically better with more luxurious travel and hotel benefits, better flight discounts ie 30% off or so (both local and abroad), and a few other discounts to excursions etc.

Standard Bank is great if you bank locally and you use fuel and ucount for groceries. Outside the country its pretty much totally crap. I've had my card blocked 3x when travelling because even though I listed where I will be travelling they blocked my card for fraud because I dont shop where I normally show. No sh-t Sherlock was my answer.

Ended up going to Nedbank for that and the Avo store benefits, although it doesnt score points like Ucount, but simply it works better and is fantastic for travelling abroad. I know some that also likes Discovery if youre part of the ecosystem. (ie Health, investments, etc).

Oh and you get 10% booking.com discount if you simply join...booking.com

I mailed my private banker about this. (not a flex, I promise :P )
I asked whether there were still 12 visits included and whether the minimum monthly spend is only applicable for unlimited visits.
Will post back here once I get a response.
Oh and lastly. Their Prestige and Private Bankers...are both the same with Standard Bank. There is honestly no difference. I had a problem with their credit card due to travels it being blocked and I discovered after soo many calls and emails, its the same.

Whereas with Nedbank Private.. in many cases...its a seperate branch. You know the one that doesnt make you wait for hours, that greets you with a cappuchino and so on. In Asia you tend to get the same service. But Standard Bank, join the queue and we will help you 1h30 mins later.

Oh if you can afford it, and dont mind paying the fees. And want the best card pretty much worldwide for travelling and lounge access, then get the Amex Platinum Card (via Nedbank)

Eat your heart out Standard Bank (and yes they dont care where your main account is with, so you can have Standard Bank and apply for the card too. So if you do plan to travel a lot, it has a LOT of benefits.

And very last word of warning. Standard Bank Travel insurance doesnt cover much either. No lost luggage etc. Especially if you do fly through OR Tambo where your luggage just disappears or whats in your luggage just disappears. Just be mindful of that.

These days everyone is jumping onto lounge access. Even Vodacom is offering Bidvest Lounge access to contract subscribers on RED Core and up. I haven’t tried using it, but I’m curious whether that works.
Bidvest Lounges allow ABSA student card holders in :cautious::rolleyes:

Yeah was also looking at Investec or maybe Discovery (although it has lots of loops) already have vitality and the credit card for travel benefits. Won't be tarveling much this year but have some work projcts that will require domestic travel end of the year so have some time to investiage alternatives.

The funny thing is I got an sms about this and the banker confirmed many people were being charged after they visited the lounges not knowing about the spend requirements, think my bill is also coming.

FNB slow Lounge domestic was nice, even got a massage last time I was there, never tried that before at an airport lounge flying domestic.

international? running to the bomb shelter at the airport and hoping the roof doesn't fall on your head.

Confirmation from SBSA.
Effectively the more you pay for your banking, the more you have to spend to get the lounge perk.
Seems bloody cheeky to me.
If on Signature/Platinum /World Signature CC, then R20k a month min spend to get any lounge access at all.

To qualify for complimentary visits, the monthly spend requirement must be met:
  • Achiever: R6,500/month – 2 domestic visits
  • Titanium: R10,000/month – 6 domestic visits
  • Young Professional: R10,000/month – 12 domestic visits
  • Platinum: R15,000/month – 12 domestic visits
  • World Citizen: R20,000/month – Unlimited domestic & international visits
Spend is calculated on a calendar month basis (e.g., 1–31 January).

The Bidvest lounge is not that expensive, I think.

R286 if you buy your voucher online. Gives you 2 hours access before wheels up.

If you compare comfort, the selection of food buffet and drinks it's not bad comparing to a wimpy breakfast with a hot drink and small desert.

Airport Lounge food is like Funeral finger food...
You're not too happy that you have to be there, but you'll make the best of a bad situation.
You just hope that bad smelling chatty aunty doesn't come sit next to you...
Because you'd rather just be on your phone.

Any lounge beats the price gouging in the public areas. Free drinks, food and a seat is better than a R40 cooldrink and a R100 stale sandwich you get outside the lounge.

The other main benefit for me centers more around the smaller airports. The public areas tend to suck. The little bar in the public area at PE is terrible. Feels like a run down 1980s government building backroom. I had to spend an hour or 2 there a while ago as the lounge was being refurbished.
