Hi guys. So last year I was introduced to Android for the first time when I got a Galaxy Y *hides*. Lol, yeah definately at the bottom of the food chain there. So now I want to upgrade but not sure what to get as there are a lot of options. Samsung is my favourite though, but I'm open to other devices.

The S4 would be an obvious choice right? Wrong! Way outta my budget (R5 000). Which leaves me with the S4 Mini or the S3. I love the idea of owning the Mini (size & design), but of course the S3 has a better spec sheet (more power, better screen).... Please help me here

If you're a heavy duty phone user, the S4 mini provides you with more of that precious RAM that is the true performance bottleneck at the moment.

That said, the S3 has a nicer ( higher res ) screen, and practically the same camera.

I would import the Nexus 4 or the Oppo find 5. If you don't have the cash. Wait till you have it. Android is not a good platform for midrange devices.

So processor cores and clockspeeds aren'nt everything?

Coz of the fragmentation right?

That and the fact that developers seem to develop for the highest common denominator. The fact that android is general laggy on similar hardware compared to windows and iOS doesn't help also.

This should be within budget range

Google Nexus 4 4.7" Smartphone - 16GB

Was:
R6,999.00

Now:
R4,999.00

The Nexus 4 really does look like a nice phone. But expect the nexus 5 to come out quite soon and hopefully for the same price..

As for your price range, at R5000, the s4 isn't outta your budget at all! Look around on gumtree/olx and there's lots of people selling brand new ones for that price. Or if you feel a little uneasy about dealing on gumtree, check out the carbonite/sagamer forums.

Sony Xperia V.

I would recommend the LG Nexus 4. The Kalahari special at R5,000 is compelling. I am on my second day after moving on from a Galaxy Note I. Glad my TouchWiz days are behind me

Another benefit with the Nexus phones is that you get timely updates which allows you to point and laugh at all the other Android phones.

There are some draw backs though like full glass on the back and front which makes intimidating to handle and accessories are generally not available at local shops but most of the items can be ordered online.

Make no mistake though, it is a really nice phone, wish i bought it earlier.

There is also the Moto X phone which will be announced next week and the mysterious new Nexus phone which there are many rumours about. So I'd say you're spoilt for choice.

I would recommend the Nexus 4. Beautiful device, and that price from Kalahari is really good (compared to what it normally gets sold for here).

Otherwise, you could find a slightly used S4 within your budget...

You mentioned R5k is outa your budget.

goto carbonite or gumtree (be careful) and get a second hand s3 for R3000-R3500. Best specs for price. Flash it with a different rom and you right as rain.
