Hi,

Has anyone used any LTE antenna's with the new Hauwei B618 Router that WebAfrica / Afrihost / etc is packaging with their deals? I need to get some better LTE coverage to some of our client's branches, where there is RAIN coverage, but it's inside office buildings where I know LTE coverage is poor due to the concrete / metal structure.

Would a 11dBi Dual Polarised High Gain LTE Antenna work on this router, for example? Neither of the ISP's can confirm yet, and apparently RIAN hasn't tested it yet. So I am hoping someone has tried it with one of these antenna's?

I installed the outdoor Poynting yesterday LPDA92 or something like that. 2 Antenae, on above the other, top horizontal, bottom vertical. It gave me the following improvement.

Internal ant.
RSRQ: -11dB
RSRP: -67dBm
SINR: 23dB

Ext ant:
RSRQ: -7dB
RSRP: -57dBm
SINR: >=30dB

Up 10mbps

Without antenna very poor up and download speed.

Go to Settings/System/Device information. Towards the bottom you will see the RSRQ,RSRP and SINR values. The 4Bar is just an indication of what is happening.

I have them at home. Will post them tonight.

Yours are very good values you posted. You must be living next to the tower.

I'n not close to those values you posted.
RSRQ -6dB
RSRP -92dBm
SINR 8 dB

I installed a Xpol-2 antenna but its giving me the exact same performance as the internal one. (Granted I didnt yet try and mount it very high up).

Maybe Im doing something wrong ^^"

Same here , Installed Xpol-6, minimal gain of RSPR 10dBm, SINR 5dB. Minimal gain in download speeds.

Did you change your settings at Settings/System/Antenna Settings ?

Default is internal, if I am correct, could be Auto. I set mine to External.

Yes, I am close to the tower. I do not know what these towers look like and there is quite a few. So what do one look for to know, that is the one?

I read an article somewhere that explain the benefit of external ant/stronger signal. When the tower gets saturated with users, it shrinks the coverage area. Thus throwing off weaker clients. So, the stronger you can get it, the better your changes that you are not kicked off. My own words, hope it make sense :)

I did change the settings to use external connection.

My next option is to try and mount it high enough to try and get line of sight. Luckily rain was able to provide which direction I should face it to.

Who did you contact to get the location of your Tower?

If you contact coverage@rain.co.za with your address they can give you the direction to point your antanne too. Download a compass app on your phone and then you get the direction.

Also you can play with the antenna to see if stats improve.

yeah they will tell you the general direction or sometimes to a landmark closeby (if you give them your GPS position..)

They will tell you... Your at ..... Point your antenna towards Shopping centre or towards the Library or Stadium (they won't tell you exact building.. but ye. (it narrows it down to general direction and at least some sort of a guide if you can sorta get line of site)

How do you use the antenna

Hi you need one of these and then when you log in to the router you set it to external and you need to jump up on the roof and start pointing it in the right direction.
