Watch out for the malware/phissing WinAtivirus, had problems with that, fake security alert in taskbar, that takes you to fake website that wants you to enter credit card details to buy the software to remove the annoying popup balloon

Well, I have been using BitDefender for some time now, since then it has blocked several spyware and viruses. But, still as I said...I am on Linux 95% of the time because it rulez

I've been testing the free AVG but recently I went to update it and it downloaded a lot of files but then when I tried to run it it gave an error. I reverted to the older version and it was fine.
Kaspersky is rated one of the most effective - top 2 on some lists. I used it with ZoneAlarm which did the job without fail, but it seemed to slow everything down. I haven't quite worked out which is the system hog.
Only when scanning, viewing my process list with two users logged on, zclient.exe uses like 3.5mb, which is nothing, firefox sits at 80mb
It's a great antivirus/antispam/antispyware/firewall package, rated on windowssecrets.com as one of the best and highly recommended

Kaspersky is excellent might I say so myself but it takes forever to scan and is very resource hungry in my experience.

Interesting to see bitdefender in pos 1 on that list. Certainly not very user friendly, lots of settings there.

Nod32 without a doubt. Trend is worst anti-virus, other not bad would be AVG.

I have recently moved to NOD32 v2.7 which is excellent and uses minimal resources.
My previous choice was Norton - I know, not many people like it, but:
1. It has the best interface.
2. It updates easily.
3. It caught everything that was thrown at it.
The only reason that I have switched is that I cannot "activate" the new NAV2007.
My advice, is you use NAV:
1. Only use the Antivirus - do not buy/install Systemworks or Norton Internet Security - they are resource hungry. NAV on its own is OK.
2. NAV2004 was good, NAV2005 was pathetic, NAV2006 is very nice and NAV2007 looks excellent.
3. Disable the scan email before sending - speeds up you system.

NOD32, I actually can't believe that more people don't use it. It has consistantly rated tops for "in-the-wild" viruses, and has probably THE fastest scanner around. Probably the only reason why people DON'T like it, is because of the very plain/simple interface.

I must confess - I'm guilty!
I'm using Norton Internet Security 2006 and so far no problems. Actually very happy with it, but I know there are other solutions on the market and freeware.

Bitdefender 10. Just got it and very impressed. Used to be on Norton, no bad experiences but a bit heavy on the juice. And, being a bit paranoid, Windows Defender, AdAware SE, Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, AVG Anti Spyware and Spyware Terminator. (did I mention that I am a bit paranoid, hey, who said that...)

I don't find BitDefender hard at all. However I only started using it now. (Version 10...)
My War Machine
AVG, Windows Defender, Spywareblaster plus a 60 000-line hosts file which blocks all known malware and phising sites (and ads, hehe).
Works on system level (both IE and Firefox are protected).
Plus ZoneAlarm (don't groan, it works fine on my home network).
The best anti-malware hosts file is here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
Have a look at the huge variety of sites it blocks.
I don't use Adblock: it is a bit like making war with a peashooter.
To prevent timeout delays with this setup you must disable the Windows DNS Client service and install eDexter.
Btw Spywareblaster blocks an additional 7 000 sites and|or malware.
NOTE:
If you merge different hosts files you must remove all comments and reduce text formatting to a common standard (no tabs, single spaces only, no space between the end of the lines and the carriage return). PsPad can do it all in a minute. If you don't, your hosts file will contain thousands of duplicates.

I'm uninstalling Windose Defender, misses 3 tracking cookies that Spybot S&D finds, what else might it miss?
Uninstalling Windows Defender would be a mistake because no single app exist which can provide all the protection you need or perceive to need.
A layered defense is best: if evil should succeed in penetrating the barbed wire, a waiting landmine will blow it up. Windows Defender is right up front in terms of a barbed wire defense.
Stuff like cookies and ads are benign (they cannot harm your system) and can easily be dealt with in other ways.
I think indiscriminate ad and cookie blocking is bad for the internet. It for instance destroys the ability of a good websites like this to earn a decent income.
