Which bakkie? NP200 or Chev

Hey guys,

So I need to purchase a new vehicle for my company, and am choosing between the two above.

At the moment, we have a Chev corsa 2011 1.7TD, which is on its last legs. Bought it for a steal when I was offered it, but it's time to change after 200 000km.

I am happy with the brand, but I really like the look of the NP200 over the new chef's bloody back suspension that's 5km high over a tiny wheel. Before I go ahead and test drive, any stories that someone here may have in relation to the two (Horror stories)
 
NP200, Chev left SA, no new models comming, just maintenance and parts for 5 - 10years. The guy at Reeds said 15years, hard to belief.

He told me the bigger cars will be difficult to sell for good value in 3 years.

Just be clear Chev has not left just yet. They are actually leaving end of the year. There are good deals on the Chev bak at the mo

Was in the same position end of last year. Chev more car like and NP200 more "bakkie". Managed a good deal on Nissan and pulled the trigger.

Had some railings made so taking dogs with to the beach on holiday this week. Yay!

I had a Corsa 1.8 Sport years ago, was a much better drive than the 1.6 NP200. If it wasn't for the special I would've gone chev
 
The fact that GM changed the Opel Corsa name to a Chev Utility made no difference mechanically speaking, its still the same old 1.4 and 1.8 Motor that has been going forever which means that even long after GM has left South Africa there will be spares for the two aforementioned motors as many of the old Kadetts, Corsas and some other models have the same motor.
The price may be a issue some time in the future, however in 10 years time, the world may be altogether a different place from the perspective of the cars we drive whether GM is here or not.
Basically the car parts market is still going to be here for a long time.

That being said I prefer the Chev Utility 1.4, pity they stopped selling the 1.3 Diesel.
 
I remember testing both Chev 1.4 and NP200 1.6 in 2011.

Handling:
Both were mediocre (perhaps because I was spoiled by an AWD performance vehicle before), but the Chev suspension felt a little too springy for me, like a cheap double bed. In the end, I decided that the NP200 handled far better than the Chev. Both are not built from the ground up to be bakkies, but to me the NP200 felt far more stable without a load.

Performance:
The NP200 load may be rated at 800kg, but I'd hate to actually drive either of the 1.6 versions under a full load. The Chev 1.4 was not much better.

Interior:
The Chev looked like mutton dressed as lamb, a lot of bling. I felt more comfortable with the NP200's more conservative interior.

Fuel consumption:
Both manufacturers lie, but I think that Nissan's marketing dept tell far bigger ones.

Warranty:
The Nissan's warranty was tops -- 6 years, 150 000 kms.

In the end I opted for a 1.5dCi NP200 +safety pack -- it has been almost 6 years and I haven't regretted it. 5 months ago I changed tyres for the first time, around 70 000kms. I also replaced the factory-fitted battery last weekend. Apart from the services, which I consider to be fairly cheap, she's been a pleasure. Relatively light on diesel too, I have a heavy right foot and I get 700km on a 45l tank using 500ppm and under 600km using 50ppm. She takes both, but seems to prefer the higher sulphur content.
 
Ive come across a steal of a vehicle in terms of a Chev utility. 30 000km on the clock for R125 000. FSH, electric windows, aircon etc. The service from the agent has also been phenomenal. This alone is making me go for the vehicle. Will be test driving either today or tomorrow.

The NP200 looks better, but that interior is what is throwing me off, man. Looks super cheap. With the amount of KM's I drive, this needs to be a bit on the "better" side.

Loath to buy a Chinese cheapie but for the price of a Utility you get a bakkie instead.
Only off-putting thing for me is the 3 year warranty. While the vehicle is most certainly cheap, a 5 year warranty would be preferred. Perhaps if you took the 5 Year / 60000km Service Plan they could offer the full 5 year warranty, at least to 100000km.

Warranty - 3 years/ 100 000km
Roadside Assistance - 2 years/ unlimited km
Service Plan - Optional 5 years/ 60 000 km
Service Intervals - 15 000 km
 
We've got a fleet of 4 NP200 bakkies in my new venture. 2 more being delivered today. Great for work and good service from Nissan thus far. I wouldn't want one as my personal transportation. Chevy probably nicer, as stated above.
