they do exactly that, but in such a way that the passenger cell where your feet and hands and head go
isnt affected while the crash energy is directed around you safely.
it gives its life to protect you,

even an old car should do that made in the last 30 or so years.

Alot of these are supermini or subcompact sized.
A Q7 is considered midsized
