I have moved to an area with no telkom conn for the next 2 years at least, so I am forced to go 3G. Frankly, I'd have stayed with ADSL if I could. Read through the forums, but obviously one can't read ALL the posts, so I am not as informed as I would like to be.

I hate signing 24 month contracts, but month2month looks like an even bigger rip-off... is a 2-year contract really signing your life away? It just irritates me that one is "forced" into a contract by companies - to the extent that, out of principle, I do not want to do business with these companies.

Seemingly Sentech and cellphone companies MTN/Vodacom are no-goes, which leaves iBurst, but they sounds like the flavour of the month to me - which is why I don't want to commit to a 2 year contract.

So what to do?

Swings and roundabouts:
On MyWi at least you can buy a (usually) resellable modem outright ..and we've seen prices down to the R1000 mark. Thusly armed, you can get a 30day/month2month notice contract that, yes (fantasy time: SNO/Virgin/some deus-ex-machina leaves us with REAL broadband at REAL broadband prices, etc ..next month ..*sigh*) you can cancel in the second month of usage.

FTR, I'm RIGHT with you on not signing 2 year contracts ..which is why my current cell number is prepaid Cell-C, but now that Virgin is offering me a CHOICE (not a word usually with which .za consumers are familiar) I'll be jumping ship - and NOT getting locked in to an onerous/rapacious contract, with a new phone, on which I'll be putting down a deposit and paying off in 6 months; exactly the kind of thing that makes me a happy consumer!

As far as deciding which service to go for (and presuming that you're able to receive all!), and this REALLY depends* on your usage pattern, Sentech amount to the best bet. That said, I'll freely admit I'm biased, on account of being a reseller (and soon to be doing itBust ;) too, but that's not yet online) but look at it this way: of all the available services, whose forum chatter has the least amount of gripes and grumbles?

*if you're at all inclined to need/want/USE capacity, no one else comes within a country mile of Sentech, specially at the same kind of price points: I mean, the entry level offering is 10gig - and each higher package scales up its usage allocation accordingly. Also, and this just 0wns: should you manage to exceed your allocation, depending on HOW, WHEN ..and how often, you may not even hear from them if it's an isolated/one off.

You actually have to work pretty damn hard at it to get them to 1. notice that you're consuming excessive amounts of data and 2. up and call/notify you ..and up until then you're not cut off/throttled/impaired in any way, you get to merrily keep guzzling away at all those luvverly bits!

Anyhow, HTH ..and I can be reached by PM/email/phone if you decide you wanna sign up :cool:

Sentech=government

Why should i pay more tax than i need to. Cant wait until ISP's can self provision.
