AMD Phenom X3 Tripple Core 8750 - Black Edition CPU - 2.4Ghz Socket AM2+

OR

AMD Phenom x4 Quad Core 9650 - Boxed CPU - 2.3Ghz Socket AM2+

I currently have an X2 64 5200+ 2.7. My 9800gtx+ is feeling a little unused :p

BUT, heres the tricky part. I'm going to upgrade my motherboard Bios to support AM2+, as it is AM2. According to http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ASUS/M2N-VM_DVI.html, my motherboard does support both of these cpu's.

Which one would you recommend and state your reasons. Cheers :)

Well, you could go with the X3 Black Edition and hope to unlock the fourth core provided your motherboard supports core unlocking. I assume you intend to overclock (the Black Edition comes with an unlocked multiplier).

Otherwise, some apps and games have difficulty working with 3 cores, so your best bet for all-round software happiness would be a quad core.

I just got a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core (955) 3.2GHz Processor 4 for R1,954.99 from Crowntech.co.za

Awesome prices there. The 955 is pretty much the same as the 965 when overclocked. the 965 is AMD's best chip and it runs at 3.4GHz. But they both overclock to 3.8 easily and to 4 with a good aftermarket cooler.

So if you're going AMD, for R1,954.99 you can have pretty much the best one. Free delivery too.

That's a very nice price!

oopsie.. I used the non-vat price.. lol.. I fixed it. But it was still the cheapest I found it anywhere. And I checked everywhere! Mybb is timing out allot. I fixed the post but it took forever to actually post.

Go with the quad core, lap it, use a after market cooler & overclock it.

Is there a reason you don't want to go Phenom II rather. AFAIK AM3 is backward compatible and will be a better choice. For around R1100 you can get the Quad 620. I have the 8750 x3 and it does not OC very well.

Well, my motherboard is the Asus M2N-VM DVI. So its a cheapy and i'm only looking to upgrade my cpu since i'm on a heavy budget atm. How worth it will this upgrade be? From a x2 5200+ to a x4 9650? Is it worth it? Considering my graphics card being a 9800gtx+?
