I feel so sorry for a friend's son in Highway Gardens - their ADSL is bad at best and non-existent at times. Fibre is only scheduled for next year.

He doing a degree and stresses over assisgnments when the internet goes down so I was thinking of getting him a dongle. It can't be network locked (if there is such a thing).

3G/4G would be good and is it possible to log onto their ADSL wifi when speeds are good?

Thanks.

There are probably newer models but I used to use a Vodafone branded R205 I think it's a Huawei E586. What I liked about it was that you could use it as a dongle but it worked as a wi-fi hotspot also. I still use it,worked great in the last round of loadshedding, it had about a 2 hour battery life.

Is it locked in to Vodacom?

ISPs like Afrihost offer "open" dongles and quite good data rates.

Will have a look at their page tks.

Get the black Huawei B315 LTE Router + battery pack [upto 3/4/5? hours] that works on all networks. Telkom Direct store R1309 however some stores are pricing it slightly higher. This normally retails close to R2k and is a recent addition [in black + battery backup].

cavedog has posted a pic of what you get here :).

Code:
Huawei B315 is a new 4G LTE CPE with LTE Category 4 technology. Huawei B315 could achieve LTE connection of up to 150Mbps through its
Gigabit Ethernet port. There are four Ethernet ports for LAN/WAN. It also features a USB 2.0 port for HDD, flash drives, network
storage devices and printers. The B315 LTE CPE could cover smoother wireless network for 250 meters. Even after a successful upgrade,
you can easily restore software to the previous version. Simply hold the WPS and Power buttons for a seamless rollback.
With the LTE CPE B315, the brother model Huawei B310 LTE CPE is also presented with less LAN ports and no USB port.

No in the past I have used Vodacom, those Cell C 200GB prepaid sims and the Telkom 60+60GB also. The wifi range is pretty decent.

I was afraid this would happen :) Will look into the device and 99:1 this is the one I'll buy being irresistibly drawn to the best I can afford.

Thanks Yuu and to cavedog for doing the legwork.

Thanks you JJCT, will look into this as well as the one suggested by Yuu.
