Modern vehicles are packed with safety tech, some of which can be seen as useful, others as a hindrance.

Which driver-assist features do you find useful?

My car has cruise control which is great on a long trip
The rear camera is pretty useless as the glare in the cabin makes it almost invisible
It does not have any of the other features

2018 Honda CRV

Adaptive cruise control has really made long distance journeys a pleasure, where cruise control was mostly just a huge pain in the ass.

Autonomous braking when reversing drove me nuts, so had to turn it off.

Traffic Jam Assist (which is really just adaptive cruise control with the ability to pull off) has made it possible for me to actually take the car to town without losing my mind, but I would prefer it to respond more quickly from the dead stop.

Haven’t seen automatic high beam assist, but automatic headlights are one of those features that just works without you even realising until you jump in a car without it. Automatic windscreen wipers aren’t far behind in that regard, just things you never need to think about any more.

A missing one from the list is an electric boot lid, but more so the ability to open it hands free when you are carrying a bunch of stuff. A life changing feature I never knew I needed.

Another one not on the list is the automatic handbrake. Again something that once it’s there you just forget it exists and you wonder why the button is even still there at all, until you jump in a car that doesn’t do it.

My Touareg has PDC and that is about it but I did drive my wife's Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max 390T which had a ton of stuff that was largely switched off as it was annoying, distracting and potentially would make for a lazy driver. I do miss the rearview camera in my previous Golf R though and rear cross traffic alert is bloody useful when reversing out of a parking or our driveway where visiblity is limited. Autonomous braking is hit and miss, I have only been in a car when it was not needed at all, basically a false alarm that scares the beejezus out of you leaving you scratching your head.

I turn off the stupid start and stop thing. Terrible idea, wish I could turn off hill assist

I love the electronic tail gates, I just hope my wife's Tiguan boot shocks never fail as they are ridiculously expensive.

I hardly use the ebrake in my Touareg, unfortunately failures at higher mileage are common and you are literally stuck dragging the car on to a flat bed to a workshop to force the ebrake off.

Autonomous emergency braking saved me last year, was trying to slow down without having the person behind me crashing into me and then the person in front of me slammed on brakes while I was still checking my rearview mirror.

Lane keep assist is nice when driving on highways when its windy, reduced the need for constant micro corrections.

*Rear braking has also saved at least one toddler from being reversed over at school.

I only have cruise control, I do love it on long trips.

- I would add reverse camera or park assist if I could.
- Automatic boot open and close would be amazing. I have to open it with a key or via the lever at the moment.

One thing that I'm really struggling with at the moment is the blind spot behind the front pillars.
It seems to be that oncoming cars turning Infront of me are always blocked by these pillars. I feel like in previous cars this was less of a problem, if there was a way to improve this I would.
