I need a new phone. My contract with Autopage is coming to and end and I am not renewing it, but I intend to keep my number on prepaid. Its a secondary number, but allot of people and customers insist on phoning me on it.
The phone I am using now is one of them R100 things and its not really doing the job, so I was going to go and spend six or seven hundred rand on a phone.

But then I was thinking I have been wanting to get a droid phone, and if I'm going to spend money I would rather spend it on something I want.

So: What is a decent droid phone for a decent price. I would love to get something like a DHD, but I just cannot justify spending that kind of money on a second phone. Unless I get one second hand I suppose.
Advice?

I think the best cheap droid right now is either the vodafone 845 or the vodafone 858 smart.

The first is ~R700 but only has 2.1 software as well as a resistive screen then the latter is ~R1100 but has a capacitive screen as well as 2.2

Not sure this helps you, but I am using an SGS (not the newly released one) and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Not sure if that's on your radar.

I posted this on another thread, but the original SGS is available on prepaid from 8ta for R3,048. Just buy one, throw away the 8ta sim card, and use it with your existing number.

Then again, since you already have phone, maybe you should consider a tablet instead? I love my Android smartphone, but I find myself increasingly wishing I had more screen real estate for browsing, reading, games, videos, etc.

That SGS for R3k is really a very good deal, assuming its fully unlocked.

Otherwise, look at the Motorola Defy or the LG Optimus 2X, which are decently priced.

Youcan get the motorola Defy for around R2 700 if you know where to look. If you want some help let me know via PM and I'll see what I can find (a hobby of mine).

The phone has some amazing features, it comes packed with Android Eclair 2.1, but is upgradeble to 2.2 via motorola's website. It's water resistant, you can actually drop it under water and it'll work fine. It's dust proof and scratch resistant. It's got a high resolution screen and a decent processor and memory under the hood. It's my kind of phone.

Game Stores have the Vodafone 858 advertised in their weekly specials, usually week-in, week-out for R999.

Can check again online for next week's, from about Tuesday afternoon :
