Howdy ppl.

Which is the recommended Linux based firewall package / distribution to use when segmenting your private network from the Wireless link?

I am currently downloading Smoothwall and Shorewall and will have a look at these asap but really wanted to know what everyone else is using and their thoughts on this?

Tx

gui firewall

i have not tried smoothwall or shorewall, but like to have a nice gui to compile and install firewall. i use the fw on www.fwbuilder.org very nice gui and it is free if you run it on linux desktop. the windows version you have register before it expires.

same answer as always when asked what ... to use.

WRT54G with openwrt of course, because its a fully linux enabled device, with iptables etc, its really quite easy to make it a firewall.
openwrt actually has a prebuilt firewall config in it.
I know mines been setup as a client, I totally firewall my lan from the device, NAT outbound requests through it, and have portforwarding to services I allow on my local LAN.
If you need any help configuring it, just PM me, or find me on MSN

I've been using Smoothwall for about 6 months now and I'm very satisfied. With Smoothwall you can have an orange interface which is good for what you want to do. It also leaves open the red interface on Smoothwall for your internet connection.

Thanks for the suggestions so far...

Dorris, we are planning on using the Freifunk firmware in order to utilise OLSR. I believe that Freifunk is based on OpenWRT so would I be correct in thinking that I can still setup OpenWRT's firewall?

I installed Smoothwall on an old Intel board I had last night - USB Ports only -no PS2 and it seemed to freeze the system so I will try again on an older P1 system.

Thanks

I've used IPCop and Smoothwall as welol. Very good the both of them.

IPCop was created by the breakaway group from Smoothwall. If you use them both you'll notice massive similarities between them.

yeah, as far as I know, freifunk can be put over openwrt as an ipkg, so it is just an addon package to openwrt, never used it, I don't know what it really does, I just use openwrt experimental, with the olsr ipkg, will modify the jawug howtos section to include AP + firewall, currently it only includes client + firewall, as far as I recall, openwrt default bridges the lan segment with the wireless interface, so it needs a little tweaking to separate and firewall the interfaces. we also made a bit of a hack at our suninghill node recently, to turn an openwrt into an ethernet bridge + AP + firewall, which bridges an openwrt AP to a client AP, and does the firewalling as necessary.

##############EDIT###########
ok, edited the howtos section http://www.jawug.za.net/HowTo
it now includes the basics you'll need to know about securing your LAN and running a wireless network using openwrt

I installed IPCOP last night and r very impressed.

Need to do some tinkering but looks pretty simple to use.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
