Hi Guys...

I mostly download my movies (if available) in 720p or 1080p MKV files... They are around 600/700MB in size if I remember correctly.

Clearly this is a compressed format.

What's the ideal size (roughly) and/or format, that'll give the best HD experience on my Mede8er. MKV vs RMVB vs x.264... I'm confused!!

Any movies you recommend to test?

Thanks!;)

Seeing as a 2 hour movie DVD is 7GB + I'm sure you can imagine how compressed a 600mb mkv file is. For example there is a 15GB mkv file for Avatar on torrent sites, this will be more like it

haha and Bluray is a 50GB format...

I have 6 Blu-Ray movies, biggest was The Dark Knight at 47GB, removed everything but the movie and hd sound and the file came to 43GB, still 1080p.
If you are going to be downloading stuff look in the range from 3GB - 7GB that will still distplay decent quality I have found, I have both the 8GB mkv and the original of Dark Knight , I can notice a slight difference in video quality, but the main difference is SOUND, the Blu-Ray coming through in HD but the rip is AC3.
The rips really lower the sound quaility , my 5c.

I dunno, you can clearly see the compression problems of the HD rips, especially in black areas. My dvd's often look better than my HD rips, but my HD rips are still a lot better than the DVD rips.

All my HD movie backups are MKV format and range between 8gb and 25GB, dependant on the movie length as well as the audio formats ripped - DTS will increase the size, and AC3 not so much.
My Mede8er plays all without any issues.

An average HD movie compressed to under 4GB is a bit of a waste of time IMO, as you lose the HD effect as it's meant to be shown - a 12GB filesize seems perfect, as you can get the full HD frame size without noticable loss of quality, plus keep the DTS audio!

I've never seen MKV rips in that size, only Xvid ones.

For 720P MKV HD rips I generally download the 5-7Gb range for movies.

For "SD" Xvid rips anything between 1.5-2.5Gb versions.
