Hey guys,

I want to set up a small home lan to play multiplayer (co-op preferred) with my two sons 8 and 11.

I have a older desktop (geforce gt7600 and 3 Gb ram, cored2duo) and two i3 notebooks.

I used to play alot of fps in the old days, doom, duke, quake, unreal, half-life, moh, far cry1, etc , but have not been playing for a few years.

Can you please advise which co-op fps (or similar) will be suitable and fun to play?

I am looking at:

battlefield 1942
rainbow 6 vegas 2
counter strike:source
swat 4
Call of Duty: World at War

Please be in mind that I have to buy these games from steam or somewhere, as I don't have them. Then also the issue of multiple copies/serial keys etc...

Any advise will be appreciated guys.

Thanks

Counter Strike can run on any PC. I had a laptop, which is even worse than your old PC, and it could run Counter strike quite well. It had Geforce Go 7400 (128MB dedicated graphics), 1GB DDR RAM, 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo, 60GB HDD 5400RPM.

I could play COD4 on lowest graphics possible on my old laptop, I couldn't run COD4MW2.

I would get CS, its fun. I would also get Team Fortress 2, I could LAN that game with friends quite well, without any lag, on my old system.

Doom Duke3D and Quake 1&2 all have Co-Op multiplayer modes, but probably
won't run on most modern day PC's without some modification.

Serious Sam, and of course Counter-Strike (with bots:D) is a more modern
one you could try.

Imho though, RPG games such as Diablo or Dungeon Siege are far more fun in
cooperative modes.

Racing games are also fun for a short while, but it gets old pretty quickly when
one player keeps dominating.

Try openarena. It's basically a free quake3 built on the quake3 engine.

SWAT4?

EDIT: Doh just read your list properly :P

BF1942 is great so long as you're still using Windows XP.

Thanks for replies guys.

I am running WIN7 on all pc's.

Seems SWAT4 is not available on Steam? it looks really good.

I think I will try counter-strike first. Should I get normal CS? CS Source? another version?

Hey thanks man, busy dl it now. Not really co-op but good mp, and it's free :D

you should try serious sam , it worked on my nvidia 6200 back in the day and was very fun coop . just run and gun madness .

i dont think swat4 would be suitable for 8 and 11 y old's ... its very technical :D doubt they would have the patience lol

cod waw is awesome for coop

For some reason, I do not like serious sam. Like things a bit more structured, ie. mission based.

Alot of people on other forums seems to indicate Rainbow Six:Vegas. have you played it? Less structured then SWAT 4?

Either that or Rainbow Six: Raven Shield or Counter-Strike Source.

Give the Delta Force games a go as well perhaps, I remember us having quite a bit of fun playing that co-op at our lans.

six vegas is also tops if you can get hold of it ! love it ! we still play it randomly on our 1 day lans :P

Yead Rainbow6 Vegas 2 definitely tops my list of Co-Op games. Flippen awesome.

Half-life mod called SVEN CO-Op, not sure if its still around, but if it is, its definitely worth it. You can play single player half life co-op, can do little side missions they give, very cool.

Diablo 2 is brilliant.
Starcraft 1
Quake 1,2,3 (www.quakelive.com for free quake 3)
Borderlands -- not sure if it will run on your PC's, but possibly.
Torchlight

Just finished downloading (yeah 384Kb line). Game is virtually unplayable on my machine, even with all settings at low. Does that seem normal?

Not at all, my brother played it on my 1.6GHz netbook with 1GB RAM the other day.
