Which GFX card and why

I think OC'd cards are just a money making gimmick... Unless they come with a custom cooler and/or voltage unlocked...
You can usually OC any reference card to the speeds of the OC'd ones so no point in paying a premium for that imo...

What he tried to say is, that a OC GTX 460 = 5850 in price, with better performance going to the GTX460. If you take an OCed 5850, the price difference will bring you back to the GTX 460, cause it is cheaper.

GTX460 1GB < 5850 < GTX 460 1GB OC < 5850 OC

An OC'd (OC'd version, not home OC'd) 460 only barely beats a stock 5850. So rather take the stock card since then you still have room to improve. If the OP was low on cash then sure, 460 all the way. But if you can afford a stock GPU with (essentially) equal performance to that of another OC'd GPU then you should always be picking the stock one, which is the 5850 in this case.

Yeah, but keep in mind, a stock GTX 460 is going for about R2200 now and the 5850 is going for about R2700. That is a R500 difference... ;)

A (not so) quick analysis using the average fps from several games (from two review sites) as the benchmark
GTX460 768mb - 52.0 fps
GTX460 1gb - 55.27 fps
HD5850 - 61.64 fps

So Rand per fps (using cheapest non sale options for each GPU):
GTX460 768mb @R1950 - R37.98 per frame
GTX460 1gb @R2200 - R39.80 per frame
HD5850 @R2700 - R43.80 per frame

So value for money the 768mb version is the best. So the HD5850 is 37% and 23% more expensive than the 768mb and 1gb version respectively, while being 15% and 10% faster. Now make up your own mind.

I'd say look at what price you can get each for
460 1GB
5850
470

Depending on the prices..
if 5850 <= R2.5k Get it hands down!
if it's R3k the I'd get 460 as they around R2.5k or if you want put a bit in for the 470 as they like R3.2k

But also look at the available space in your case as cards are different sizes. What kind of air flow do you have in your case if it's poor you should only look at 460/5850 as 470 is quite hot!

What size power supply you got?

EDIT: Also what screen res are you using?

PSU is an Gigabyte Odin 720w
Screen is a 23" Samsung 2232GW LCD running at 1680 x 1050
Case is a Gigabyte 3D Mars full tower case with fans all over the place

For that res, I'd look at the 460 and save some cash.. Not saying the 5850 is overkill but hey it's your money in the end so as long as you happy with your purchase.. They really are good little cards, but like i said it really depends on what price you will be paying that will determine their price/performance.
Just check out reviews (at your res) and make up your mind whether the extra money spent on a 5850 is worth your while.
