So I am looking to buy my first ever GPS, I always used my phone back in SA, but now I am in Germany where I am pretty clueless on getting around anywhere and would like a decent GPS that can make my life a bit easier when driving, I get my car on Friday, so i'm all excited and stuff :p I have a budget of about 200-250 euros

Any reason you can't continue to use your phone?

Some of the high end Garmins come with lifetime traffic + lifetime maps, which is nice. Not sure whether those are available in DE though. Think I paid like 2kish for mine.

Allways liked the Navigon interface - used to be German company, now part of Garmin
You can get the hardware or apps for Ios and Android

I've been looking at the nuvii models, they seem decent?

But it's like does it really matter if I go for a tom tom or a Garmin.

I've got this one:

Yeah - its much the same either way. Personally I'd want something that has lifetime maps...traffic is less important but occasionally convenient ("left lane closed in 3.5km"). You can go for a TomTom...similar as I said...my uncle has a TomTom with a screen that looked washed out to me so i just stick with what I know.

Oh and don't change the default voice...default voice pronounces street names others don't. Sure it massacres the (Afrikaans) names but its better than "turn left".

Only thing I don't like about the 2495 is the cable...its too thick and has a separate lose cable / antenna thing for the traffic updates.

I've heard that before :/
LOL!

On topic: I use my Google maps on my phone, and it's perfect. Gives traffic and quickest routes. If you take another road than indicated on the phone, it will almost instantly reroute you, not like some GPSs that takes 10 seconds to calculate a new route. Even have some roads on there that don't show on some GPSs. Only thing I'd like to get from the Google maps (which other GPSs' have) is a speeding camera warning.

My TomTom has an Afrikaans voice.
