Which hatchback do you recommend?

Below R100k.

I like the fiesta, but it'd be nice to know what the general concensus is.

Thanks:)

Fiesta is R170k to R200k.

So I guess you're looking second hand?

Fiesta is a good option.

You can get a 2011 demo Figo Ambiente for just under 100k, with balance of warranty. I'm actually looking for one for my sister...

Fiesta will be high mileage at that price.

If you are not too set on the more traditional brands, you can always have a look at the Kia Picanto. A new one will fall perfectly within your budget. My family owns 2 and we have not had any problems. They are very well built and come highly spec'd. We looked at both the Picanto and Figo when shopping around and the Kia wins hands down.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Ford fan, but the Figo is old. Buying one will set you back 10 years.

Fiesta is a good choice, they got excellent reviews in the Buying Used articles that CAR magazine had and in general you hear few complaints on them. You might also want consider the Corsa D (mk4) as you can pick up 2007/2008 models for about R100k. Look out for the Enjoy spec since is has cruise control, trip computer and a whole range of extras.

I bought a Fiesta last year 1.4 2007 model with 30k km on the clock for R90k with all extras and extended unlimited km 2year warranty. A awesome car for sure!

I drive one of these and yes, they are exceptional. Solid build quality, very refined, roomy interior - the steering wheel has massive range, in both depth and height - and it's light on juice. I drive a 1400 and I get 510 kays on 38 litres in pure stop-start Jo'burg town driving. It's a 45 litre tank but I fill it up when it reaches the red mark, so there's still a good 7 litres to spare and I'd guess enough to do 600 kays of town driving. Haven't been on a long run yet but I think I could get close to 800 kays on a tank down to Durban.

which Corsa model is that? Link please

i am also in the hunt for a 2nd hand car. new car is too expensive as i would have gone for the rio tec, but out of my price range. i20 looks boring now. would'nt mind the i20 remix, but also out of my price range. my budget is up to 120k max. must have 4 door hatch, fuel saver, looker on the road, good maintenance wise, spacious too. the only car i have on my radar is the runx 160i sport. i drive a pimped A3 Audi with all the features. i don't want to be dissapointed when i do upgrade. 1800 is too much for me now. i appreciate your guys feedback on cars in this range though.

Just as an aside; I drive a 2010-spec model while the model in this article is the 2011-spec facelift. The differences are new headlights, grille and front apron and the engines were also beefed up. My 1.4 has a 66 kW unit while the 2011-spec gets the slighty beefier 74 kW unit. Interior styling is identical though from the 2007-2010 spec to the 2011-present facelift.

The Essentia is supposed to start selling from R170k but you get them on GM Red Tag sales from R155k :

Considering what you get for that money its the best deal in the segment.

So its actually the Essentia, but it goes for R170k?

I picked my Essentia up as a G2 Approved Used Car from Williams Hunt last year. I got it for R114.950 (I nailed their Red Tag sale) and it still had 30,000 kays left on it's original 60,000 kay service plan along with the balance of it's 5-year, 120,000 kay warranty. My Essentia doesn't have electric windows or the trip computer, but it does have dual front airbags, ABS brakes, electric exterior mirrors, height adjustable driver's seat, autolock central locking (when you exceed 20 km/h the doors lock themselves), aircon, satellite controls for the radio on the steering wheel and a nice little storage tray under the passenger seat.

Right now you can find low mileage 2008 Essentia's & Enjoy's (slightly higher spec than an Essentia) for R99,000-00 and under.

They merged the Enjoy and Essentia line in June 2010. I bought one then and it has the 74kw Euro-5 engine, electric windows and the rest of the stuff that was standard on the Essentia. It does not have a trip computer or cruise control which the Enjoy had. The only car better in terms of spec level is an i20.

Did they boost the engine in 2010 already? Do you have a Twinport or Ecotec unit? My Essentia is a January 2010 model, so I must of just missed the engine improvement. Hence the good price I believe. I'm seeing 2010 Essentias going for as much as R119,995 now while I got mine for R5,000 cheaper last April.

good prices guys. another option for me. i like the sporty look on it. would look nice with a nice tint and a stunning mag.
