Hi myBB'ers,

Can someone please tell me if there is a one-size-fits-all HDMI cable, or do I need to get the one suited to my specific needs. Are they all compatible with each other? Could I maybe get the wrong one? With all these different versions, I'm not sure.

I just want to watch movies from my laptop on my HD TV.

Thanx.

HDMI cbles are a standard size, so anyone should work fine with your laptop. unless your laptop uses mini or micro hdmi but i highly doubt that as those are used on smaller devices (cellphones tablets ect) - all laptops i have seen have standard hdmi ports.

Also don't get ripped off by the sales people into spending a huge amount of cash on one, dont spent more then R150 on a cable (a R50 one is just as good as aR500 one)

Not to be insulting but are you sure your laptop has an HDMI port? they way you phrase your question makes me wonder if you do?

Sorry, maybe one-size-fits-all wasn't the right phrase, I was trying to imply version. At Game I saw a 1.3a cable for R99 and a 1.4a cable for R150, and then a Belkin cable which didn't specify a version. So that is what I'm asking about. Which version?

Hehe... yes, it does have an HDMI port

Any HDMI cable will do, they are all the same. As isie says, make sure your laptop has a HDMI input.

onlyy diference between 1.4a and 1.3a is 1.4 suports these functions, which i highly doubt you would be using:
3D over HDMI
Ethernet channel
Audio return channel
4K Ă— 2K resolution support (resolution of 4096 x2160) which I dont think your TV nor laptop can currently support
but since its only 50 bucks more really up to you

Ok wrt the versions. Anything over 1.3 should be fine. I'm still using a 1.2 cable to connect my laptop to the tv for watching movies in the kids room.

IIRC you need 1.3 or higher for 3D.

Edit, I see you need 1.4 for 3D.

I wouldn't say exactly the same.

Once when rewiring my setup, I mistakenly connected my PS3 using the cheap/thin cable that came with my HDPVR and at 1080p 60Hz I got flashing streaks (bit errors). Swapped it back to the thicker cable I bought (±R200) and the streaks disappeared. The thinner cable though works perfectly with the HDPVR at 1080i 50Hz (lower bitrate).

This is not really true, depending on your setup the more expensive cables do make a difference. You'll only start noticing it once your setup starts costing R60k+ though, and even more so when you go over the R150k line.

For normal average Joe use I agree, anything will do, but there is a reason you get HDMI cables in excess of R1000 a pop.

I am sure the more expensive ones in addition to what was said will be more resistant to emi.

I have a (hamachi) 1.4 cable which is flat and it is working great.

I bought a cable once at IC threw away the slip, got home and the cable didn't work which they wouldn't replace.

When I use a 1.3 on my 3D Blueray Player I get aerror when watching HD content, I had to go to game and get me a 1.4 Ellies cable. The 1.3 works fine on standard laptop , xbox , mediaplayers though

The only consideration is if the cable is long (over 10 metres). Then a better constructed cable will handle higher frequencies better. I once had a 0.8 metre cable that delivered sparkles, and taking it apart before I threw it away I found some of the shielding uncrimped.

A good quality high-speed HDMi 1.3 cable is good for 1080p and 720p 3D... HDMi 1.4 for 4K and 1080p 3D.

If it's not AudioQuest, don't even consider it. Nothing comes close to what you get with the silver plated conductors, digital audio direction control and bi-directional ethernet.

(I work with someone who actually believes this stuff)
