Hi all

Coming from Blacberry it is taking me a bit longer than I expected to get use to my 1 week old shiny new Galaxy S3. I googled what is the equivalent for BBM on my S3 and couple places say ChatON.

While I was still on Blacberry I heard about WhatsApp, but didn't bother since I had "free data". Anyways a lot of people seem to be on WhatsApp and it use to be free and I wanted to load it on my S3, but then I noticed it says the 1st year is free, thereafter a dollar a year. I spoke to some1 thats been on Whatsapp for longer than that and they don't know what I'm talking about when I mentioned this.

So whats the story? Is whatsapp free? (it sounds like a better program than chaton, but I have no experience with it so can't really say)

Any suggestions or comments about either Whatsapp or Chaton?
Maybe something else thats better than both?

I would say use Whatsapp. Never heard of Chaton.
Everybody i know without a BB uses Whatsapp. And everybody i know with a BB has Whatsapp loaded in any case.
You are right it is free for one year and then you pay a small amount per year. But then i have also heard of people who just continued using it after the year is up with no problem.
Even if you have to pay its only a dollar.
Totally worth it:)

Whatsapp is more popular with most people. It even works on Nokia phones, so most people with a smartphone can use it. And if you find someone that does not know how, do what a local cell phone shop does:

charge them R80 to load Whatsapp and Mxit, charge them a further R120 to show them how to use the apps.

You just have t love to hate A _ _ o _ _ _ e

I agree. Use whatsapp, been using it since it came out without paying the $1. As alternative, you can also consider Gtalk?

whatsapp FTW !!!!! even have BB buddies who prefer whatsapp because of the seamless integration

WhatsApp. Chances are most of your contacts already has it, works on most phones and you don't have stupid PIN's to reset and ****

I've used whatsapp for a few years and never had to pay for it. Even if I did have to pay, I'd still be happy $1 a year for it. Having said that, I don't actually like it that much - I prefer BBM, and if that's not available, GTalk. But because everyone has whatsapp, I use it more than Gtalk. I don't have whatsapp installed on my Samsung Galaxy Note, but I do have it on my BB 9900.

ChatON is closer to BBM in functionality, pity no one is one it, so you will have to follow the people and install Whatsapp.

So I take it, you are not with Cellc .Works out wonder full for me ,especially when I am overseas.

Cheapest solution!,but you are right ,the uptake is hampering what I think is a great app.

Whatsapp petty much everyone’s on it, as for payment you both right its free for 1 year trial and then $1 a year after that - however they seem to be extending that free trial indefinitely.
