Hi All,
I'm glad I found this forum, cause it might spare me a lot of troubles.
I have just come (back) to South Africa. Haven't been here the last 17 years. I've been in Austria/Europe. I must say internet is far more advanced in Europe and the states.. but that is not the issue here.
I was used to a 4mbit/512k xDSL uncapped Line with a fair use limit of 20gb/month with a night flat rate for 59€/month (approx 440Rand) and no add. ISP costs.
xDSL may be future or will never be available in SA, but ADSL is. In Austria we have a 4mbit ADSL (with xDSL 12mbit). Here the fastest is 1mbit which is already great.
But now: I don't know what to get. Telkom ADSL, iBurst, 3G or MyWireless.
Telkom already puts me off with their absolut terrible customer service. It cost me a fortune on the phone aswell.
I tried to get the 512k line and I was waiting for 8 weeks till the told me to deposit to get my phone line activated. By that time I was so fed up I told them to shove it somewhere and cancelled.
I'm only staying in the flat where we are for another 4months, so I won't bugger getting ADSL again.
Should I get any of the wireless things (I use a laptop and live in Gardens, CapeTown), or are they no use.
I would use it for: email, surfing, occasianal driver or tool downloads and most of all to skype to europe (need a good upload for that, approx 128k min.).
Or should I wait till I get a place where I will stay longer and try telkom again? Also cost is an issue. Now I run to internet cafe's and pay from 10-25R and/hour depending where I am. Which accumulates to about 400-500/month .
I'm lost, any good hints or ideas?
Thanks in advance.
