Just sitting here, noticing all the whinging that happens on various gaming threads so I thought I'd see where this one goes, even if it is hypothetical. :D

Food for thought;

Which is more illegal-er?

A legal gaming server with 100% of the players owning illegal copies of the game, being played on it. Example: An official WoW/CoD 4 server with all of the players owning illegal copies of the games (provided somehow, magically their fake cd keys worked).

OR

An illegal gaming server with 100% of the players owning legal copies of the game? Example: A local World of Warcraft server (emulated of course) with 100s of players all owning legal copies of the game.

....3...2...1....and GO!
 
depends how you look at it:) i think the 2nd is better because the good people at infinity ward are still getting paid for their PHENOMINAL contribution to this planet but telkom( evil sons of....) are getting the wool pulled over their eyes:D:D:D
 
Remember, re: your 2nd example, you don't need to buy the game to play on the pirated servers. That's exactly the reason WHY it's so ****ed up.

WoW is free to download but you need a CD Key for activation to play on the legal servers (and then obviously pay per month to keep playing)

It's a trick question and I refuse to answer, both are extremely illegal
 
well WoW one is illegal.. even if u do own a full legal copy, u are only allowed to use the game on official Servers. there for ur Private Servers are "illegal" u see. if u create ur own private server u can add and adjust ur own accounts. u will only need a CD key to install the game. after that the key is useless other than validadting it on a offiacal server when signing up.
as for the COD one.. would also be illegal cause u breaking the Copyrights law. but using a copied game. so both are a big fat NONO..
 
I mean you guys here in SA have good prices on games so buy them! When I see games like Fear 2 costing ~399 Rand I just buy them back in Germany you have to pay around 600-700 Rand per game. So yes back in Germany I used to download them because it was just to much € for 10h play time. But since I'm here I just buy them. I bought my first CoD again (CoD 5) since CoD 2 + addon. Now if all Devs would drop rhe copy protections they would save money and could give that right trough to the buyer.

And what I also love these versions of the games here are the full uncut deals! If you want to get uncut games in Germany you have to buy them in the UK and it will cost another 100 Rand more.

I would say the second one are more illegal. Even with fake CD's and key's you still need to pay a subscription to play the game. You are also less likely to fork out money for a subscription if you know you have an illegal game, so the number of people doing this will be quite few and quite stupid.

Your option 2 where there is an illegal server on the other hand have legal game CD's but updates and game time are stolen. Without a security check the admin of said server cant check for legal serial numbers anyway, so it does not stop the players to use fake key's and CD's. As the server stands a chance of being busted, people using legal CD key's on these servers would therefore also be few or stupid.
