Okay I'm all new to the ADSL scene so pls bare with me. I've been using iBurst since 2004 so i'm clueless when it comes to ADSL and it's offerings.

I have a 4MB line, but due to my distance from the exchange I can only receive ±1.3MB - which to be honest i'm quite pleased with since it is faster than iBurst.

I do quite a lot of downloading from Rapidshare (premium account) and will definitely need an ISP that will offer fast, reliable international browsing.

I have been told by friends, that my best option is to use IS OpenWeb accounts for my needs.

How strict is OpenWeb when it comes to capping? Is their OpenBrowse option recommended?

Please advise, and if not OpenWeb, please state the ISP that you reckon I should sign up with.

I don't mind paying ±R350 - R400 per month.

TIA

I got Axxess to take over my 4Mbps connection from Telkom and now it costs a bit less, and I use their prepaid account which carries over unused bandwidth for 12 months.
Take a look at their webpage to see which account fits your needs.
I had it changed over to SAIX and use vouchers for IS on their voucher account.
As a new customer you can purchase bandwidth at R59 per GB if you use a SB credit card or Cheque card.

I'm happy with Axxess service and found them to be very helpful.

I am with WebAfrica... very happy with them as an ISP, they are one of the highest rated.

By the way, I don't think you will be able to use the OpenBrowse option for Rapidshare downloading. It is only for pure HTTP traffic and no downloads.

@MrH - I remember you from your iBurst days.. You also used to use RS quite often, no? Do you still use RS with ADSL, if so how many GB do you pull down on avg.?

Ok will check them out and see..

Thanx.

Yes I still have a RS account and use it every day, I don't download as many GB as I used to with iburst (that was exceptional since we could bypass the cap back then) but still get all the goodies that I want every month at a far greater speed.

I'm on month2month with Axxess and the 4Mbps line is costing R359 (no telkom payments anymore) and then I buy bandwidth as I need it in chunks of 3GB.

I take it they are billing your for the full 4Mb service?

I'm sure they do since they say "up to 4Mbps" so anything over 512Kbps or 1Mbps you will pay the full 4Mbps costs. (at least that's what telkom told me)

From what i've seen, the two biggest players here are IS and SAIX and everyone is selling some or other form of account with them. Since the connection infrastructure for the DSL is at the two ISPs, their re-sellers should not really change anything?

So in my humble opinion it boils down to price vs support/product value. I am getting this from Axxess at the moment. I'm connecting to the IS Dial cloud. if I switch to Openweb and connect - again to the IS Dial cloud - i doubt my connection speed or quality will change.

I may however be completely wrong. its late and im low on coffee.

Yeah obviously.. This is Telkom we talking about.

They really should have 1, 2 & 3 Mb/s options for those that cannot get the full 4Mb/s speed or at leat just bill them less.

21:49 and it's late!!!!! man the night has not even begun for me yet, still at least 6 hours to go.

old age :( i remember the good old days of being on IRC until 3am. but now i need my sleep :)

Ive got accounts with Axxess, Webafrica as well as telkom.
Webafrica are by far the best when it comes to support HANDS DOWN!!!
Axxess are probably worse than Telkom support wise.
Anyways, I moved over (Thursday) To the Telkom Do3 package. R 554 a month I think with 3gig int cap as well as 30 Gigs Local...
Thats not bad at all...
