I'm going to be looking for an ADSL provider within the next 6 months or so as I'll be moving back home from a short stay in Europe, where I have enjoyed uncapped 60mb fibre (and enjoyed it alot!).

I know i cant expect to get the same sort of connectivity in SA, but with a budget of around R500 a month (for the line and the service) I'm looking to get the following:

- Around 2Mbps
- Uncapped and torrent friendly
- As little latency as possible to Europe so that I can enjoy League of Legends

Anyone have any recommendations? I'm currently looking at Web Africa. I'll be based in Cape Town.

Lol. that's not much of a budget.

You'll be able to get a decent 1Meg connection or that budget. Soon to be upgraded by Telkom to 2Meg.

Latency is also determined by the congestion levels of the exchange. So see if you can find out how congested the exchange is where you're planning to stay before getting anything.

I have a 1MB line and with Afrihost, getting 500+ ping to EU servers after 4pm, so my gaming days are rpetty much done.

I'd be hoping for generally 200ms or less. i think my initial leaning is towards WebAfrica.

Hi there,

You could look at the possibility of WiMax through Neotel. They have a 1Mbps uncapped, unshaped asymmetrical line for R499. The FUP is also reasonable. The 2Mbps is R749. The contention ratio on WiMax is much lower than that of ADSL, so the 1Mbps WiMax will out perform the 2Mbps ADSL. WiMax uses direct line of site with a base station so they would need to check your coverage first and do a site survey to confirm line of site. You will be charged a once off installation fee of R500.
