Which ISP should I choose?

Hey Jacky, if you only use 15gb a month, go for cybersmart nightrider plus... 15gb and unlimited downloading for 6.5 hours a night(unshaped)

I can identify with Coolidge. I moved from Telkom to Mweb 384k uncapped as I just could not stand the cap anymore. The Mweb connection procedure was ok except that they messed up the accounts a bit but got it sorted out. I live in Gordons Bay and then tried to play a bit of BF2 online on the Saix game servers and found my ping to the DSLAM to average 500ms and more. Asked Mweb about it and they said I must ask Telkom as Mweb are wholesaling from them. Fat lot of good that does me, Telkom are not interested as I am an Mweb client and Mweb can't help as it is not their line I am hooking into:-) If you move to Mweb leave the ADSL line rental with Telkom so you have recourse to them. General performance is not the best but I love the idea of not having to fork out for extra cap. Have been thinking of upgrading to Mweb 4mb uncapped but the latency puts me off. If Telkom bring out a reasoanble uncapped option, or one with a high enough cap of around 30-40gb I would move back. I seem to use about 1gb a day for work, email and some downloads. I stayed in London for a while and payed 8.50 pounds for an 8mb uncapped line (to be honest they had a fair usage policy of around 40gb too so not 100% uncapped) that was bl**dy fast. One still had to get a line from BT but then the ISPs looked after everything else. Hoping that at some stage SA will exit the middle ages and join the now world:-) It's a pity that mobile internet is so expensive as I get about double the speeds if I use my 3G mobile phone for Internet connectivity.

axxess lite?

thanks for info Aharon.
I am so confused, I'm pretty happy with cybersmart, but seeing all these uncapped deals for same price or less?

Can anyone please tell me how axxess uncapped is? also how does axxess lite work? why is it so cheap?

Hi Jacky,

The uncapped options are great, but are shaped, meaning if you like torrents or other p2p, you are going to be heavily limited, and more so during peak times. Axess lite is capped, and unshaped at 19 per gig, but you would have to pay adsl line rental seperately. Cybersmart is all inclusive for 299 (15gb cap and nightrider times uncapped and unshaped).

Regards

Desperately need help

Hi there,

I desperately need help. I have been with Sainet since a while and I have 384k uncapped account.
But believe me, the speed is always under 30kbps(less than dial up) at all times of the day and all days of the week.
I would like to know which other ISP is giving the same service but with good speeds. I wanted to go for Mweb. Is it a good idea?

Thanks for your help.

maybe there is an InfoGraphic here somewhere. Ok maybe not, because of all the pricing changes.
but maybe this information can be placed on an easily accessible page in an easy to view layout.

for even I am stuck, I just want a 1mb line with 10GB cap at the best price possible. 4mb seems too much, 512 seems pointless. Yet this new 1mb seems to fill the gap well. Why is it not available on all ISPs? I suppose that that would cause more people to get stuck.

more options ~ stuckness

Maybe have a look at this?

hello,

I realized I was wrong. I found what the problem was. I think I just didn't understand this part of my binaries.
Thanks again for your care.

Hey guys, some help will be much appreciated. I've had Telkom's do broadband 2 which has recently expired. I'd like to get uncapped adsl, so which isp would u suggest?Reliabilty is key. I'd also prefer not getting into a contract, such as the 1 I had with Telkom. Thnx.

Package for WoW?

hi guys

i fired my ISP (webafrica titan package) on two counts:
1. utter rubbish info being provided from support when there were issues
2. utter rubbish latencies/pings in wow - damn thing was bouncing from 500ms to 800+ms which makes raiding, pvp and dungeon crawling utterly lame (i'm usually the tank or healer so i need to be like - there!)

i want an isp package ONLY for Word of Warcraft. i don't need anything else - i get a few emails etc.

my guildies and i play together from my place - 3 of us. i have a 4meg line, a good linksys router and excellent hardware with proper firewalling and anti-virus.

all 3 of us play together, none of us torrent/download or do other silly nonsense. occasional email, browsing is usually for wow related stuff. yes - we're wow addicts. :)

looking at afrihost platinum, 5gb unshaped for R145 per month. anyone got any other suggestions?

(side rant)
i'm not price sensitive as much as i am quality sensitive, and i want the support people to tell me the truth. there is nothing worse than knowing something is wrong and being told its your dns settings, and then without you changing anything it suddenly starts working a day later. bollocks i say! (/side rant)

suggestions welcome.

5GB unshaped @ R145 is a very good price. Do you have to sign a contract? If not, get it for a month and test. It's the only real answer you'll get.

Hi guys

I want to move over to an uncapped 384k package but I am not sure who I should move to. I want to use the account for occasional downloading and streaming and also for playing games online, which would be quite a bit (mostly WoW, Starcraft 2, CoD and Diablo 2). Also would an ISP also provide a modem? Because that would be a huge plus. I'm mostly looking for good service and reliable speeds with as low as possible latencies. I would gladly welcome any help you guys have to offer :D

Thanks

Hey my main account is with Telkom and they are good, however, I am really having a good experience with Afrihost too. The Telkom top ups are very pricey so I opened a pre-paid Afrihost account. If your usage is fixed then go for the DoBroadband 3 Winston Edition, it is currently on a 9GB cap (upto 10Mbps Line if your exchange supports it, I'm currently only getting about 7Mbps). If you run out of your cap Afrihost Pre-Paid is reasonable and you data is valid for 1 year after purchase.

Alternatively try a straigh forward Afrihost account. You will not be disappointed with their service levels.

Hope this helps!!

thanks - some good suggestions - i didn't know about the telkom 9gb account.

Stay away from Afrihost, they s*** big time. Do a search on the foirum, and you'll see.

Love them or hate them, but MWEB's still the best option, even after I booted them.

Or try PCFlive.co.za - R10gb R130, 20gb R200, 30gb R300, 50gb R450.

I think every ISP will have a bad story somewhere on this forum. I wont consider it to be the most reliable source of information...

They all have supporters and detractors, I think you have to take the time, read the threads and judge for yourself. I think if you know what kind of usage you have (so that you can pay special attention to users who have the same needs) , and you ignore the 10% of lunatics on either end of the spectrum, you will get much more reliable information here than anywhere else. If you jump in with one post and expect others to have done the work for you, you might get bad advice.
