Which ISP should I choose?

Hey all. Been trying to find another ISP for a while. I've been stuck on Neotel for ages now and I honestly don't think I can take it anymore. My max speed on Neotel lite is 16 Kb/s (even though I was promised 50). Basically, I'm looking for an Uncapped ISP under R500 a month with speeds over 16 Kilobytes a second. Hell, I'd even be happier if I could get a constant 16 Kb/s. I've looked around on the forums, and think maybe digichilli or Mweb might be better. Another note I should make is that I never play games online. Can someone please help me? Neotel have just been screwing me around since day 1, and I'm past sick of it.

Hey my main account is with Telkom and they are good, however, I am really having a good experience with Afrihost too. The Telkom top ups are very pricey so I opened a pre-paid Afrihost account. If your usage is fixed then go for the DoBroadband 3 Winston Edition, it is currently on a 9GB cap (upto 10Mbps Line if your exchange supports it, I'm currently only getting about 7Mbps). If you run out of your cap Afrihost Pre-Paid is reasonable and you data is valid for 1 year after purchase.

Alternatively try a straigh forward Afrihost account. You will not be disappointed with their service levels.

Hope this helps!!
How is AH nowdays? Was with them, and they were excellent. Thinking about Power user. More for gaming Ps3?

Sheesh... IS is shaping me to hell and beyond...

I'm shaped so much my upload speed is faster than my download speed

I had the exact same issues. My uploads was around 2x faster than any given download test. Especially with international sites for around 3 weeks. Turns out it was a side effect of my exchange being upgraded to 10Mbps. Now it's up and stable it's all good.

u guys who use multiple ISPs on ADSL.... what do u reckon is the 'best connection' for gaming?
I have been using GConnect for months, and its about as rock solid stable as I could ask for. Last month I thought I'd give Afrihost a try, since their prepaid package is a bit cheaper (R39/Gb vs GC-R59/Gb)
But holy crap, while Afrihost connection is fine for browsing, it is seriously starting to p!ss me off bigtime when gaming online.... get disconnected about 5 times a night during the 2hour odd session.
Being cheaper per gig doesnt mean ***** if u cant even play one gaming session without being disconnected! I dunno if its just the prepaid packages, or if they deliberately disconnect users for a second every now & then to discourage people constantly downloading, or whateva.... I now have to switch router back to Gconnect settings when I want to play :-(
Howz your ISP for gaming?

Openweb 4meg Gold uncapped - Excellent on PS3 online. Had per gig via SAIX and IS, and suffered a lot with disconnects and latency. Now on VB, and it rocks. So much better!

yep... thats pretty much what I get on Afrihost (IS), thats when the speedtest website actually loads.

Yeah, WTH is up with that? Most websites are okay-ish, but speedtest is just broken.

I'm currently with a IS reseller that none of you have probably heard of - it's not their main line of business. Not even sure if they take public applications - a friend of my workplace's owner organised it for work, and since it worked well enough at work, I got an account from them for home as well.

But ever since work switched over to Uncapped, I've started to notice worse and worse speeds. I run a restaurant, and we've been offering free Wi-Fi internet to our customers for a few months now. (I think there's a few that might be downloading heavily.) I've got the software to limit speed per connecting computer or cap each "account" we hand out, but I don't really want to go that route - it just upsets people. ;) At home, I'm still using per gig, and the speed is now noticeably better there. (No, I'm not testing at work while others are connected.)

So are we getting more and more aggressively shaped because IS realised they need to limit their uncapped users more - or are we actually being throttled. (I don't think the IS reseller that I'm using is doing any shaping/throttling themselves - it doesn't quite seem like an area of expertise for them.)

And is IS blocking speedtest.net on purpose, or what?

@gksa re: speedtest.net

Just double check your browser settings and update your flash ect. I see the speedtest site has a new look and feel to it. IS wouldn't block it but because speedtest changed their site just make sure everything is updated on your side. If it still doesn't work you will have to chat to the guys who installed your hotspot.

can you recommend a 384k uncapped provider?
i'd like to klap some torrents after hours and view youtube vids
i dont care that the speeds for torrents will be that slow, the pc will be running through the night.
also, i wont use the adsl during daytime in the week.

(yes i know 4meg is much better ,but im so bloody broke until september, i even have to borrow a bloody router til then. if im happy that ADSL is for me, and that im actually using more than 5 gig per month, i will opt for the 4meg line at a later stage)

how much is the most that you've downloaded per month on a 384 line with your uncapped account?

I can recommend Openweb's uncapped Lite offering...
Used them when I was in CT and got great service from them...

would be cool if this sticky could be upated with the most recent services and costs out there

I agree. High time I do something about this thread to make its first post relevant again.

I'm pondering weather I should switch to Mweb uncapped, from what I understand I should stay away from any ISP on the IS backbone since they use the 10 day rolling threshold for high usage users. I average about 150gb on a "heavy" month, usually around the 100gb mark. Any suggestions?

I am sure that's an OK usage. Some guys use 300 to 400GBs and get away with it.

I myself am going to get an uncapped 1024k account from Mweb on my 4096k line.

Please help :)

I want to run emule.

Which ISP package on the 384 is ok for this? Im not interested in torrents or newsgroups. Just emule.

Also, maybe if you could tell me what speed to expect and how much data can be transferred in a 24hr I would appreciate it?

Also how long does it take to get a password from an ISP?

Im nearing my cap on telkom :(
