Which ISP should I choose?

Help Mr. G.

Firstly ... Thank you thank you thank you ... what a cool thing YOU have started!!! ... lol ...
Mr. G. ... I love downloading stuff from the internet and usually kill my telkom 3gig soft cap by downloading approx 10 - 15 gigs on one account ... I have since followed your advise and opened 2x3gig telkom accounts and 1x30gig Local Only WebAfrica account ... But I realy need your help as to understand why and how you kill the 30gig local account?
You say that you guys download video, etc from the IS News Servers ... Can you please explain what IS News Servers are ... and how we can make 'use' of them ... lol
Thanks again for a brilliant thread ... Please help ... please please please.

PS. I have that Closer option 5 you mentioned earlier ... so I have great download speeds! ;)

Hi, scooby6c

Thank you, im glad my thread was able to assist you. :)

The IS News Server is run by internet solutions and you can use that for local downloads of movies, series etc, but you already knew that.

You will need software such as Grabit and QuickPar. The server address for the news server is news.is.co.za

For a guide of how to set everything up visit the link below.

http://www.newshost.za.net/
- once logged in, click NZB Guide, and it will tell you how to do everything, the software mentioned before is available for download, just click the downloads button on the top right menu of the site.

Note: You will just need to get a username/password before you can access it, which takes 30 seconds.

The sites I use to get the content I require for use with the local only accounts are:

http://www.newshost.za.net/
http://www.newzleech.com/
and
http://www.nzbmatrix.com/

Other unrelated stuff
http://games.saix.net
http://www.antfarm.co.za (Radio Streaming for most commercial radio stations in SA)
http://www.isgaming.co.za
ShadowFire IRC Network (za.shadowfire.org)

There are many other smaller things, check around aswell, but the above news server stuff is what you looking for.

Hope this helps.

I imagine you are using the TelkomInternet for international and OpenWeb Local Only for Local using RouteSentry?

Great, you are all set then.

I personally prefer the WebAfrica service, but many others prefer OpenWeb for their local only on this forums, thats why I automatically thought you went OpenWeb. :)

WebArica is perfectly fine, as you can see they the guys I use. You now have the exact same setup as I do. :D

If you have any further questions, dont be afraid to ask. If its not relevant to the thread, you can simply PM me.

Hope all works out for you.

Is there any _real_ difference between openweb and Webafrica? I have a WA 5 gig account and was thinking of getting a local only as well. Having them on the ssme isp would be easier.

I have never been a OpenWeb client per say, besides having one of their Uncapped accounts for a month, so I am not certain what they have in the line of a client user panel, but I know, as I am sure you have seen, WebAfrica has a very nice panel to work with.

When it comes to the actual service being delivered with the account, there is no difference. WebAfrica and OpenWeb resell the same product from Internet Solutions.

OpenWeb doesnt support credit card billing the way WebAfrica does, so if you do have an exisiting accoun with WebAfrica, then simply Add New Service, IS Local Only and youre off :)

So yeah, i recommend getting that account with WebAfrica.

SA Gateway offering 1 GB data, plus 9 GB local after cap for R70 (incl VAT) per month.

Other offers too. (2GB +28 GB local for R145 pm, incl)

It's the cheapest I know of for this type of package... I am unsure what backbone they use (IS, SAIX etc)

I saw this offer today for the first time. Its pretty good, especially because it's about the same price as 1GB prepaid at Webafrica. So you get the extra 9GB local as a bonus.

Has anyone had any experiences using SA Gateway?

Ask for self-install and you don't have to pay the R437.50 (plus you get a free modem (until March 31st - not sure if that's order date or install date)). If they try to tell you that you can't get self-install because they have to come and install your line, they're lying to you.

Did a self install last week, picked up the ?free? modem Monday 16 Apr, verified Thursday after they called to confirm ADSL is active. I will monitor the telscam bill for May just in case they are trying to SCAM me.

TelkomInternet has changed their capping policy (apparently) and also its prices/service. I will update the list in the coming days to reflect what has been confirmed.

*UPDATED*
Please continue to post or PM me if you find something inaccurate, or if there is something you disagree with that I can review the post, if something has changed I may not always have edited a recommendation in another section of the post.

Thank You

Yeah, you should cancel the account if you are not happy with 6GB for the R239

I have to say the service I have seen from WebAfrica is exceptional.

I log a call on their site and they respond in good time :)

My Dad logged a call a few days ago and honest to shyte they phoned him back within five minutes to have the account problem sorted !!! and it was either a Saturday or Sunday night as well.

I don't have a credit card but WebAfrica allow you to wire them the funds and then just e-mail them proof of payment. This is very easy for me as I have Internet Banking.

Vista

Hi MrG

I just got a 4MB telkom line with the telkom 3GB ISP also. I also got myself a Web Africa prepaid account.

Now I'm going to get a local 30GB as well, but just browsing through some of the forums I saw that RouteSentry isnt going to work on Vista.

My question: I think I saw somewhere in this thread that you are running Vista. Do you actually use Route Sentry or do you use different computers?

Hello Slich,

I am using RouteSentry myself on Windows XP, I have given Windows Vista right from RC1 in November 2006, till as recently as last month a chance with the RTM however I have had MANY issues regarding software and driver conflicts.

I never personally had RouteSentry working with Vista, even though there is a beta version available. Shortly after I reloaded Windows XP a friend of mine attempted using the updated RouteSentry beta that came out and apparently that did work for him from time to time, also not being fully reliable.

With Vista there is no easy answers until more software is designed with XP in mind. Have you tried the Vista RouteSentry beta on your machine if not (by what you said in your post) give it a try and see if it works?

Vista

I havent actually applied for the 30GB local package from Web Africa yet... I'm going to as soon as my ISP stuff is sorted out... My dad borrowed a router from work because telkom didnt have any stock.

Now this is wierd, its a plain telkom ADSL Ports router but it let me have access to the internet without setting up a connection at all. We think maybe my dads work has set up the router to logon on using the works account.

Long story short, I'm trying to get my prepaid account working and thought Route Sentry might help with that... But chances are small
