Which ISP to manage Openserve fibre line?

I had a combo nailed down untill a started seeing quite a few bad threads about AH.

I'm moving to Royal Ascot in CT end of May. The unit I'm renting already has its fibre line installed. As a side note: If someone could perhaps shed some light as to how it works "activating" fibre where it's already installed? Does telkom put in a new ONT and flip a switch somewhere?

To the actual question. I was going to get 100mbps openserve on a 25gb capped package from AH and pair it with a 400gb fatpipe from vox. A lot of people have been complaining about AH. Will i have any issues going with AH seeing as the line is already installed and need the cheapest ISP to manage the line with openserve? I've heard their support has gone to the crapper but since I'll be using vox data i shouldn't experience network issues right?

Ive got a couple of Vox Fatpipe promo accounts for data and Openserve line + 50gb + fixed IP via Axxess - no issues.
 
If you have a special data account you want to use and really just need a line, the best place for that has always been ISPAfrika. Email garth[at]ispafrika.co.za and he'll sort you out.

Other than that it's best to just use the same ISP for line and data. My Cool Ideas connection would cost way more if I was getting the line separately from someone else.

In Vox's case it's not cheaper. I think ISPAfrika is also slightly more expensive if you take Afrihost's install cost absorption if you know you're going to keep it with them for 18 months.
Again though, Afrihost did price increase in the middle of a contract. I am on a 100Mbps + 25GB Afrihost (inactive) + 300 GB Vox (active one). Not having any problems. Note Afrihost still hasn't implemented roll-over.

I'm paying less than the afrihost rate with ISPAfrika... I would email Garth to check

I used to have my openserve fibre with ISPAfrika when i lived in PE. If i remember correctly back then you convinced me on the PE fibre thread and I wasn't disappointed at all. Garth probably gave me the best customer service I've ever had from an ISP. I actually told him if i ever get fibre again I'll contact them.

However they are a bit expensive for what i need to do. I jave 400gb from vox which never lets me down. I guess it won't hurt giving him a call and finding out what the costs would be seeing as my install is done already. How much they would charge for the line and the smallest data package.

You have exactly the setup i was going for, if there wasn't major issues from AH side for installing activating then I'm happy coz after that I'm done with them and using vox. Sucks about the rollover would be nice to have a backup account of lile 75gb.
 
Just to anyone who's interrested. Garth from ISPAfrika got back to me today. They can give me 100mbps openserve with 10GB capped data for R729 pm. They'll waive the installation fee if your line has already been installed and you have the ONT. If previous tenants/owners of the house took the ONT with them, you'll have to pay for the ONT (don't have a price). So it's a little cheaper than the Afrihost option, but without a doubt 200% better client service imo.

Just an update on this; have decided to order a 200Mbit service with Web Africa for the following reasons:

1. They will be covering the clawback (R1440) from my current ISP
2. No costs for migration.
3. Month-to-month
4. Supplied router for period of use (NOT rent to own)
5. Price*

*Regarding price, they cost R1069 for line + 40GB data; vs ISPAfrika which costs R999 for line only without the clawback reimbursement and no supplied hardware.

Purely taking the clawback amount into consideration, the lower cost of ISPAfrika (R70) will only break even after 21 months...

and I get to keep the hardware from my old ISP, an additional router to use as an AP and a spare capped account I can use as failover.


All this for my parent's place :D

Can't argue the math!!lol. Enjoy it! I'm sort of in the same mind. Even though the ISP router might not be that great atleast you get one which is not the case with ISPAfrika. I can just add my existing wan router as an access point to cover the whole house with both routers. The savings with ISPAfrika vs AH wont cover the cost of buying another router myself in the period of my lease.

The router Web Africa is sending is quite decent for home use, with gigabit ports and dual-band WiFi (Archer C2)

One problem... when you run into a line issue you will have to deal with WebAfrica... I'm so utterly sick of the pathetic service from our large players that I would be quite happy to use ISPAfrika even if it was more expensive. I can't put a value on being able to email Garth and request emergency assistance - the last time my line was down he had OpenServe at my place the very next morning.

For Openserve lines, doing faults is easy and all ISPs use the same system with the same wait times. I'm sure Garth must be on the ball but ultimately faults aren't up to the individual ISP and getting a fault logged is quick now - but lets see ;)
