Which ISP to Pick?

Afrihost doesn't shape their capped accounts. I get full line speed all day err day

They might not "shape" the line much, but international throughput is not even close to IS based ISPs nor Telkom for example.

Have been with snail mail (Telkom), then Mweb and now Afrihost, the latter is imho by far the best, BUT I only surf and download after hours, being 59+ years young I only sleep 3 hours a night so my downloads is between 270 to 300 gig. Long story short which is the best ISP for me ... after hours vs cost vs speed vs reliable:wtf:

This is exactly what Afriman said, but he also then said that everyone on any product can become shaped when there is "network strain". I've personally experienced this when I was on their business uncapped and the new IOS update came out:

1. Max speeds on vpn
2. Shaped speeds without vpn

Which clearly, already told me then before "the admittance", that they in fact do shape and or throttle when the "need" arises. At least WebAfrica just said that... look guys we also shape / throttle our capped accounts.

What a joke... Shaped and or throttled capped accounts.

Jiesliek buddy... 3 hours per night of sleep? I would be a walking zombie the next day, and I am 52 years old.

Go for Afrihost business, they are pretty decent.

Took my 5 mins to find it...

That's just because you are in CT

I'm in JHB and the quality is far superior than Afrihost. Their support is also quite a bit better than when I speak to someone at Afrihost (or post on this forum)

if you want to download torrents and NZBs 24/7 and are not too concerned with streaming, then get Axxess business.

All depends on what you want, from the top of my head:

1. Shared accounts - Openweb
2. Shaped and throttled capped accounts - Web Africa, Afrihost
3. We will never tell you the exact limits of your uncapped account - Mweb
4. Don't use so much, you abuser you - Telkom, Mweb
5. 30 Days to cancel, 30 days to downgrade, but instant upgrade - Openweb, Mweb
6. Billing problems - Web Africa, Openweb
7. R1 promotions fails, Lets download the internet fail - Web Africa
8. We will bull**** you - Openweb, Mweb, Afrihost
9. We will auto close your tickets - Web Africa

...All about the features you want :)

but do not fear young OP, the chosen one will soon enter the thread and help us onto the path of salvation
Fascinating and true(ish) summary. Why do you think there are so many issues with ISP's? Do you think they all go on an How to Irritate the Customer course??

I'd like to try this but you're asking for my credit card for something that's free.

- Does not compute -

They need to do this to stop people abusing the system. Completely reasonable if you ask me.

If you are a heavy user. 200-300gb on afrihost uncapped. Your p2p and http downloads will get shaped near permanently. The only time you will be unshaped based on my experience is from 2am -6/7am.
Also streaming on afrihost isn't as good as what 2mb should be. It stutters and buffers all the time.

+1 it used to not stutter and used to be okay for me. but afrihost admitted they're shaping/throttling everyone until midnight at night before releasing the throttle. I'm with Web Africa now and it's amazing. on my 2mb line I can stream 480p with no buffer at all.

Are you referring to AH Business account?

So far I've been very happy with my 2mb AH business uncapped (I'm in JHB and not CPT) with full line speed on all downloads at any time of the day (to be fair, I'm coming from that OpenWeb rubbish). Thing is, other than youtube, I haven't really much need for streaming. That's all about to change tho as the MSAN in my area is scheduled to be activated in 2 weeks time. I'll finally be able to get a stable connection above 2mb/s!

Anyways, when that happens I'm gonna try set up unotelly/netflix with a faster line. I'm happy to move onto capped in order to lower costs, but everyone seems to be suggesting that AH is rubbish for streaming. Based on what I've gathered, WA is best for streaming but not for daytime downloading, and AH is the complete opposite..

Also, WA is not advertised as being unshaped whereas AH is.. Surely that implies that a vpn can be used on AH business as there are supposedly no shaping protocols to bypass. If they suggest otherwise, then they'll essentially be admitting to false advertising?

Anyone with any experience in comparing the two wrt daytime downloading (nzb/torrents) and streaming. (200-300gb pm)

Ah better for 24/7 torrents, WA better for streaming. On WA you really don't wanna torrent outside of 00:00-06:00.

Thanks.. It sucks that you have to make compromises on a capped account. Whichever one it is..

Do you think that a vpn would bypass any "shaping" when streaming on AH capped? I would say that I'm normally against the idea of using a vpn to dodge a FUP, but not if the product is advertised as being unshaped.

Oh you talking about capped? Then don't need to worry about time stuff on WA. They just give you extra data after midnight if you wanna use it.
