Hi there
I'm new here and this has probably been asked many times previously.
Is there anywhere to check what kind of ADSL would work best for me?
Also we has a Telkom ADSL line installed at home, so we still have the router, but it has since been disconnected, would they be able to reconnect?

Hi Antonette,

Why not give Axxess a try? If you private message us your contact details one of our Sales girls will give you a call to assist. As long as you Telkom line is active we will be able to connect you.

OK so maybe I wasn't clear enough
I need a link to somewhere where I can work out which ADSL option is best for me. Where questions are asked and based on the answers recommendation are made THEN I will start looking at ISPs to find the best rate for the package recommended.
So questions like
- Business or private?
- Number of users
- Type of use (Gaming, browsing, download of files + size of files etc)
- Time of day to be used

This should give me an idea of capped or uncapped and the ideal connection speed.

When I start looking at ISPs a few things are important
- Coverage
- Price
- Waiting period i.e. how long will it take to get a functioning ADSL
- Service - How long they take to sort out other users' problems

Maybe someone can give me more things to consider here?

Nothing like that exists.

Best would be to tell us your requirements so we can recommend something.

OK so here goes
Requirements:
Private (home) use, 4 users
Used for basic browsing + e-mails + download of movies / series from internet
Used mainly in evenings and over week-ends
I don't like superslow connections, but don't want to pay for high speed when we won't use it
So basically we are average consumers

O ja and I'm not sure what the difference is between shaped and unshaped either, if someone could help??

Budget?

I would recommend OpenWeb. I have a 4Mbit Standard account which is perfect for use after hours, there is also the Silver account which is slightly more expensive but maybe better if you are a gamer. Both these accounts are on special at the moment: http://www.openweb.co.za/index.html

I wouldn't recommend anything under 4Mbit if you can afford it.

Shaping is when certain downloads get "slowed" down (get less priority over others) when the network is busy or during specific times. For example, torrents/news server/file sharing downloads will be slower than browsing, email and http downloads when the account is shaped.

Unshaped - Read this: http://www.mweb.co.za/helpcentre/Moreinfo/ShapedvsUnshaped.aspx

So, in other words, don't get unshaped, unless you want to pay A LOT!

Then, 4 users. Does this mean all 4 of you will be using the internet at the same time (it is likely or unlikely?). Are you a family, in other words parents and 2 kids, or a frat house with 4 people in it (meaning the cost can be split 4 ways?). This is important to know in trying to determine what speed you should get.

If you need day time use than you need at least Silver.

Luckily it's on special.

Never thought I'd recommend Telkom but I've tried them all and Telkom uncapped 4mb is great - no complaints, no slow downs.

4 users - 4 adults, only 2 of which contribute to the budget (Parents with adult kids) Possible but not likely to all access at the same time. More probable that only 1 would be using the internet at a time, downloads to be scheduled for after 12h00 at night

Very bad advice here.

If you need great day time speeds, you will need unshaped.

Openweb Gold Unshaped is actually reasonable.

If you are going to download while others will want to use the internet, I would suggest getting a 4mb line.
Otherwise if you are just going to download after hours, then I would recommend a 1 mbps line. It will be slower during the day for downloads, but fine for gaming and such.

So you have 3 stuff that you are going to pay:
-Telkom phone line (which you already pay)
-Telkom Line rental (R145 pm for 1 mbps)
-ISP data account (R149 - R199 pm for 1mbps uncapped)

If its too slow for your needs to can always upgrade it (not sure about the fee though)

4 people can game at the same time with 1 mbps, and you can only watch 1 youtube video on this speed at a time.

My total cost for Telkom+Internet comes to around R1000pm for a 4Mbit line:

Telkom line rental (with Weekender plan): R 185
Telkom ADSL (Fastest 4/10Mbps): R425
OpenWeb 4Mbit standard: R399

Total: R 1009

The standard account is on special at the moment for 369, pretty good deal.

I maybe just phrased it wrong, would really not call it "very bad advice".

Yes, unshaped has it's place, but usually not for home users but more for a small business. If you can afford it, sure, go for it. But usually a shaped account is more than good enough for home users.

If you are going to move a lot of data in a month, get an unthrottled account. That way they won't lower your speed based on the amount of data you have used.

Also, don't be too worried. Start out with something, say a 1 or 2 Mbps account, see if it works for you. If it doesn't, tell your ISP you want faster internet, then they will charge you pro-rata for the rest of the month, and you can go to a 4Mbps account or to unshaped or whatever.

Just remember ADSL line rental. There are different monthly rates for a 1Mbps, 2Mbps and 4/10 Mbps line. So if you upgrade your data package from 1Mbps to 2Mbps, you have to upgrade your ADSL line as well.

OK I think I have it now

We are not currently paying for anything i.e. no Telkom line or ADSL line rental. My previous company installed the line and paid for all of it, which means the line is there and I still have the router, but it hasn't been in operation for 2 years.

Am I right in saying that the router would also have an influence on the line speed? So I should look at the router capabilities 1st, then decide if that is enough and if not factor in the cost of buying a new one?

Router would probably be fine. No need to get a new one.

After reading all your posts again I suggest you just take the MWEB all inclusive 2Meg package. Will just be easier.
