If the line hasn't been operational for 2 years, it might be disconnected by now. You should contact Telkom first and make sure if it disconnected or not. If it is, they will have to come and enable the line for you again before you can proceed with getting ADSL.
 
My setup at the moment is I have a 4/10Mbps line with Axxess (cheaper than Telkom) and the 4Mbps Vanilla uncapped account with Openweb.

Since most of your downloading and such will happen after hours and on weekends, you don't really need more expensive accounts than this. Depends on where you are situated, but here in Welkom my Origin downloads run at over 500kBps, which is quite a bit faster than my actual account with Openweb. Yesterday after the switch I watched Youtube videos at full HD without buffering.

So, you'll need to get a Telkom phone line and a Telkom 4/10Mbps ADSL line. Then if you like you can switch the ADSL line rental over to Axxess for the savings. After your line in up and running (which will take the most time), you can get your Openweb account. I am sure one of their techs will guide you through the process of configuring your router/modem. Your current modem should be fine as well.

In the end you'll pay R139 (I think) to Telkom for the phone line. You can go for the Standard 4Mbps Openweb account that is currently on promotion for R369 per month. The up to 10Mbps ADSL line rental with Axxess is R359 per month.

Come to think of it, you might consider keeping your ADSL line with Telkom for now, as Openweb will be introducing their own line rental service sometime in the near future.

So with this you'll end up paying R867 per month for 4Mbps+ ADSL per month on Openweb Standard uncapped. That is a pretty good price for what you will be getting if you ask me. Going for slower speeds will impact the performance of your internet too much if more than one person is using it at any one time imo.
 
I would recommend Afrihost 2 M/bps Uncapped Bundle(line and data) - R497 pm
U need to contact Telkom to enable your Analog line, just request it online via their website, takes 2 - 4 weeks.
Then ones u have a telephone number contact Aftihost with you number and ask for the bundle 2 M/bps Uncapped, takes about 2 - 4 weeks also to enable.

Update: 2 year old router will be fine for a 2 M/bps line.

Why are you putting a "/" in "M/bps"? Mbps = Megabits per second. So you can make it "Mb/s" if you like.

2 - 4 weeks? That's insane. Rather go to a Telkom direct store and do it there. It took days for the lines to become active for me. Then once that is up, getting the ADSL account took minutes.

This is my suggestion. You are a new user. Becareful you don't get burned.

For now Don't worry about saving a few extra rands

Go with: Telkom for everything(Voice line rental, adsl rental and ISP cost) on a month to month contract and get if from a telkom shop if one nearby.

You can Than upgrade,downgrade or cancel after testing it for a month as than you would know your usage patterns.

Best value for money is the 2Mbps uncapped line and a good place to start. NB you get a bigger discount for having everything with telkom.

my setup:

2 Mb adsl line + 2 Mb uncapped service (telkom ISP) + line rental with closer option 2 = R602

NB Telkom gives discount for having everything with them

If you remove the closer plan than it comes down by R30

After 1 month you can than consider swapping ISPs etc. That is why only sign up for month to month contracts. Never sign 24 month unless you sure you wont change

Hey also you can get a free afrihost account as well that gives 1 GB free per month. its really great if you need to top up or need a backup adsl service.
