Hi guys,

I just got a quick question...

someone I know has a choice between a laptop with a 15.6" WXGA HD Crystalbright (1366x768 Resolution) TFT LCD display and a AMD Athlon 64 Single Core TF-20 1.6GHz 512KB Cache 667MHz FSB

or

a laptop with a Intel Celeron Dual Core T3100 1.9GHz 1MB Cache 800Mhz FSB and a 15.4" WXGA Glare Type (1280x800 resolution) TFT LCD display

the first choice has 2 gigs of DDR2-667 ram and the bottom one has 1 gig of DDR2-800 ram... I highly doubt he'll upgrade the laptop once he has it. So which one dyu think is the better choice?

Thanks

reedOsama: what is your budget for the laptop you're looking for?
Perhaps some of us could give you better suggestions on what to buy. I'd say that for R5k you could get a much better laptop than any of those 2.

Ya those 2 really do suck.. So it's a hard choice :) haha..

But ya budget would be helpful.. And you don't need to be techsavy to install ram? 4-5 screws then a little latch thingy, insert the ram then redo latch and the screws and you done..

warranty are going to be voided !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! leave the internals well alone or pay the price.

I had a broken HP laptop a few months ago. Motherboard failed. I took the whole damn thing apart to get to the HDD to make a backup of my data before sending it in for a warranty repair. The warranty covered the damage of R3965 and they didn't say a thing about me working on the laptop myself. I reckon upgrades like RAM or HDD are fine.

lol lets entertain the idea that is? Now whether you the place your order with more ram or you buy more and put it in yourself, HOW can they tell the difference? And no there are not little stickers with if broken warranty voided..

Quote off the HP FAQ (i'm sure you will find similar on most manufacturers sites):
The warranty on your HP product will not be affected by the installation of a non-HP upgrade/option unless your HP product is damaged as a result of installation and/or operation of a third party option, such damage will not be covered by HP warranty.
So as long as you install it properly which is quite easy you'll have no problems at all.. And even if you do break something, take out the extra ram close it up and send it back, saying it was dead or something :)

If you look at most notebook specs, it will say "USER UPGRADEABLE" memory or similar. So then you cannot void the warranty if you sold something as "USER UPGRADEABLE"

How are these laptops?

I have seen new dual core laptops with 2 gb memory going for around 4.2k

excellent... link please

the budget is R4000 and that's pushing it as he was only supposed to get a netbook intel atom thingamajig... the thing is he needs a optical drive

there is very seldom a seal on the cover over the RAM. You can open & add more if there is no seal & that was said to me by an importer/supplier.
