Looking to buy a new laptop and would appreciate suggestions on which one to get.
I will only use this machine for social media and online games (e.g. Forge of Empires).
Don't really have a brand preference.
I have a fantastic PC, so the laptop is purely for online things.
Thanks!

Buddy of mine has a New Dell 5400 i5 8th gen. 16gig ram, 256gig m.2 nvme. Preloaded with windows 10pro. Somewhere around the R10k. If you keen drop me a pm will pass on his digits.

Budget?

It sounds like you want a thin and light. Something like the M1 Airpad or Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.
The tablet mode of the 2-in-1 is quite nice for media consumption and simple games, the battery life is good, and if you need proper PC functionality you have it.
The 2-in-1 is not upgradeable at all though, so get the SSD size and RAM you need right from the start.

Any other thoughts on a good laptop.

This has been suggested to me

HP Probook 450 G8 15.6" FHD Intel-Core i7 1165 G7, 512GB SSD, 8Gb RAM, Win 10 Pro for R17000

What do you use it for and do you have any specific requirements ie gpu, battery, portability etc?

Thank you Ponder. I use it for work - Office 365.

Privately I use the Adobe suite but nothing intense, Indesign, and the usual Office 365, Gmail etc

No big graphics or anything but it must interface with android, I'm guessing all laptops do.

No special needs except a clear screen :ROFL::ROFL:

You can almost get away with any laptop for those functions. So you need to look at other aspects where you could improve your experience. Maybe consider a 17" display laptop, however is bulkier but a bigger screen could benefit you depending on your needs.

That's why a budget is the best starting point because you can immediately rule out a lot of options.

Acer is a great brand for general use laptops.

Here is a model I can recommend because it has a dedicated graphics card that could make your browser games run better.

R10499

However if money was no constraint I would go for Acer Swift X just because of the power to weight ratio.

Or the Asus ZenBook (R12799 - ASUS UM425UA-58512G0T Entry Level)

OMW this one def wins the beauty contest.

Now at the high end of the spectrum the ASUS UX482EG-I71610BL0X - R35699

Yes, first budget? Then what purpose?

Budget is a grey area because it's an insurance claim.

Just need one with SSD that's reasonably speedy and to be honest Acer or Asus came to mind but then I got this quote for an HP.

I do take your point about the bigger screen- that might be better actually because portability isn't a priority.

Asus support sucks, not sure about Acer. EDIT: Acer is handled by PartServe which I would avoid.

My preference is for Dell with 3yr onsite support, if something goes wrong you call them and they send a tech to your location to fix it right there.

@Nucleustech do you have any Dells to match this, "HP Probook 450 G8 15.6" FHD Intel-Core i7 1165 G7, 512GB SSD, 8Gb RAM, Win 10 Pro for R17000"

My wife has the older model of that chip (1065G7) in the lowest power configuration and it's fine for excel or even light photoshop use. We did go for 16GB, but with a fast SSD it shouldn't be necessary.

She has the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, and I actually really like the smaller form factor. For low performance requirements, I would definitely consider it for my next laptop. Her keyboard takes some getting used to though. The non-2-in-1 model has a normal keyboard.

The closest Dell model I can find is this one Dell Latitude 3520 i7-1165G7 8GB 512SSD LTE 3Yr Pro but it's way more expensive.

That price is not bad at all. I would still weigh up all options. In that price range, there are a lot of options.

Still recommend the Acer Swift X SFX14-41G-R0XW 14in FHD Ryzen 7-5700U 8GB 512GB SSD GTX1650 4GB Windows11 Home Gold Silver @ R17000. This model has a better graphics card. Because they are naughty mixing AMD CPU with Nvidia Graphics. I love to live dangerously.

Very useful advice, let's see what he comes up with, I'd be happy to buy from him. Thanks again Ponder, really helpful.

PS uncertain about graphics in HP machine.

Google said MX440 but that can't be. Please let me know interested to know.

HP ProBook 450 G8 Notebook PC
Available Graphics. Integrated: Intel® Iris® Xᵉ Graphics; Intel® UHD Graphics. Discrete: NVIDIA® GeForce® MX450 (2 GB DDR5 dedicated).

Decent Laptop and you can upgrade the RAM yourself as well
