Good day to all the mybb fanbois! ;)

So, I have always gotten excellent help on here as to what to buy, and I am in the market now for a tv.

My budget is R7000 max. Want to get an asus mm player as well, so cant go higher than that.

Also, I dont want anything smaller than 40". I see hifi corp has the BYD 46" lcd for R5000. Has anyone got one of these? Is it a worthwhile buy? Dont fully trust hifi corp, but a mate bought a 40" led from them a while ago, and its perfectly fine. Could be a lucky buy.

Anyway, let me know what you would get, and why. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot guys

Rather ask in the DSTV, TopTV, SABC, TV and Multimedia section. Ask a mod to move it for you

First off don't buy from hi fi corp.

To answer your question, LED all the way ^^

Don't touch ByDesign or Sansui, these are both Hifi Corp's own brands which are utter junk, worse than Sinotec. Other than that, if you find anything from Samsung/LG/Sony cheaper at Hifi Corp, by all means go ahead and buy from them. They do not grey import these brands any more (I suspect my friend above thinks they do?).

Your choice depends on what you want the TV for. So, what are you going to be using it for?

At the entry level of the market (your ± budget), plasma wins because it produces better blacks and more natural colours.

Entry LCDs have washed out colours, entry LEDs are even more washed out (overly contrasty). But, LCDs are better for PC work because they suffer less from image burn-in. Entry plasma is HD Ready/720p where entry LCD is Full HD/1080p.

"LED" is pure marketing gimmick, only the back-light is different (edge-lit by LEDs opposed to CCFL in LCDs); the back-light passes through the identical LCD matrix that LCDs have. 100% the same tech, only the back-light is different. LED LCD is slightly brighter. Colours are less natural as they are more contrasty, common folk seem to prefer this not knowing that it's actually inaccurate. LED LCDs can also suffer from uneven lighting. In summary, they are not worth the 10% - 15% increase in price. The only LED TVs worth considering are those back-lit by a full array of LEDs, which have local dimming. These types of TVs are very, very expensive.

HD/SD content, gaming, sport, TV = plasma
FHD content, PC work = LCD

Plasma

Samsung PS43D450 43" 720p = R5,500
Samsung PS51D450 51" 720p = R7,000

LCD

Samsung LA40D530/D550 40" 1080p = R6,000
Samsung LA46D530/D550 46" 1080p = R8,000

One other interesting thing is that to get the full benefit of full HD content, you need to sit 1m from a 32"/1.5m from a 40"/2m from a 50". So if you need full HD, you have a Blu-ray player or whatever, but you sit like 2.5m+ away from the TV, you may not necessarily need FHD. ;)

One ocrrection @ PostmanPot: sansui is not a HiFi corp own brand. It is an international Japanese brand from the late 70's / early 80's

PostmanPot, how do you know so much about plasma? Fanboi!

Haha jokes, yeah, get plasma. I bought a 42" Samsung based on advice from PP and am still, to this day, stoked with the value for quality of image I get.

The Sansui product of the 70's/80's is very different from what it is today. Selling well known brand names of yesteryear must be a lucrative business.

Just got this TV yesterday - incredible deal and incredible TV, would seriously recommend it.

Not sure if you're also using yours with a HTPC? I noticed yesterday that mine actually supports 24Hz via HDMI from the computer. So no motion blur whatsoever and you can achieve 1:1 pulldown :D

I don't see the link?

Every brand they have touched though has turned to schit. Akai used to be good back in the 80's. Wonder how Nakamichi is fairing these days?

Sansui is not the Sansui from the 80s/90s. I think Hifi Corp may assemble these new "Sansui" TVs themselves using crap parts just using the Sansui brand name.

Sansui is usually rebranded Orion stuff but it's quite possible that someone locally like hisense etc is clobbing together set under the Sansui name.

The TVs are rebranded Orion Units for the OEM market. They vary a bit by market but you can put a Orion next to a Sansui and they're identical (in most cases anyway). Either way they still schit.

Compare images of a Orion TV42LB2000 to a Sansui SLED4280, on the outside only the badge differs, internally it might be slightly different due to OEM requirements.

I realise that, what I'm saying is I think Hifi Corp assemble the TVs themselves in SA like their By:Dsign kak.

We can at least agree that they are junk. :D

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bought the exact same tv after looking at plasma and led and lcd and and and over the weekend. Was at the store for over an hour. Got mine for R6500. Bleh!!!

Plasma to me just looked dull man. Even after messing with the settings atthe store on the dstv hd channels, I prefered the LCD. SO I got it. Brilliant tv I have to say. Very happy, just wish I saw this earlier!!!!

Postmanpot, thanks for all the info and help. I really do appreciate it man.

Ah, that happens so often. People buy LCD because under bright shop lighting LCD appears brighter than plasma. Well it is, but this isn't an issue in your home because your home does not have shop lighting. I don't know anyone who runs their plasma on full cell light/brightness in their home. It seems you do not need SD quality, and the differences at HD sources between LCD/plasma is very little, much less than the differences at SD. (You still didn't tell us what you need the TV for?)

But I'm glad you're happy as that's the most important thing. I have Series 5 LCD and Series 4 plasma and both are excellent. LCD wins at full HD and computer work, plasma wins at SD, TV, sport/motion, blacks and colours. Both are also obviously excellent for HD. Plasma really shines when lighting is dim, unfortunately you didn't get the chance to test under those conditions.

CPA allows you to get refunded the difference in price I'm sure, or take it back within 7 days or something and buy elsewhere. Definitely take it up with the store you bought from!
