I've been without Medical aid for about 3 months now (I know it is a very bad idea). Basically because I used to be on medical aid with my family and haven't gotten around to finding something.

Problem is I have no idea which medical aid is a good idea or the ins/outs of medical aid. In the medical aid area I'm a complete and utter newbie.

Physically I have no problems (no hereditary conditions, no drug addictions, I'm negative for all STDs, etc.) and I'm in perfect health (IMHO) and my BMI is correct for my height, I get regular exercise, etc.

Also I never really go to the doctor, except in case of emergency, which in my case is really when it is emergency. That is apart from dental checkup once a year and such but those I don't mind paying myself if I can save R1000 a month.

In terms of cost, I'd like to not spend too much, but, I don't want to have to avoid hospital X because of medical scheme Y type of scenario unless such things are unavoidable or you pay a lot extra to avoid it. My income is enough that I'm comfortable going for something a bit more expensive IF it is really possible going to save my life.

Please help me out! :D

Any advice appreciated!

I just have a hospital plan. As I only get sick ones or twice a year and then I have this doctor I go to where I pay R150 and that includes the medicine as well. I went with Discovery's hospital as I used to be on my parents Discovery plan and for the gym benefits with vitality. I am just not going to go lie in some state hospital where I wont receive the correct attention.

Hospital plan only for you. Go for the scheme with the best reserve ratio per member, ie the most money in the bank to pay out claims. Together with this it is important to study the scheme's member profile, ie average age of members etc. The younger the better. Contrary to what most believe , this is not Discovery. Go do your own research, but I am with Genesis with my whole family of wife and 3 kids. Great prices because of the above factors, and I sleep easy.

Just avoid the medical aid whose slogan is "No nonsense, only healthcare"
In my experience words 2 and 4 should be exchanged.
Currently in a legal battle with them over non payment of PMB accounts which they are required by law to pay.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I also need to get medical aid in-case something happens to me.
Any recommendations of a medical aid that provides for a hospital plan ( in case I get a leg break etc. )
with some provision for dentistry?
Are medical aid subscriptions monthly or like a long term contract?

I've already submitted my contact details to others, so I can get contacted and weigh in the benefits.
Thanks

They'll like require a couple months of limited cover period since you were without cover for a while. In future make sure cover is continuous...

You'll prob end up paying 700ish for a decent hospital plan.

No doubt if you did a lot of research you would find one plan that is better in some aspects and another that is better elsewhere but you will battle to find one plan that is superior in all aspects.

Gnome, you say you live in CT. Based on your needs I'd recommend taking a peek at the Discovery Coastal Core option. You are "limited" to coastal hospitals for elective procedures but in an emergency you will be treated wherever you are so you would have cover for that car accident in Jhb, for instance. There are limitations in terms of cover percentages (100%), and some co-payments, but you would get these with other entry level hospital plans too, and these can be easily remedied by taking gap cover for under R200pm.

Remember that a "hospital plan" would cover you for in-hospital costs only (ie if you are admitted). You would have to fund day to day expenses (GPs, dentists, optometrists etc) from your own pocket. You could add a savings component by taking a "savings plan" but I have never been a huge fan of these if you have disposable income available to fund these yourself.

Do you guys know of medical aids that are "generous" on the dentistry side?
I might need to have a root canal, and will need some tooth repair for one partially broken tooth.
Please someone reply

Edit:I woke up with tooth pain this morning, this is a wake up call for me
