Yes another medical aid post. My eldest son will complete his Honnors degree this year. Up to now he was on our medical aid. He has received an offer from a company in Bryanston for a job. The offer does not include medical aid, so he will have to get his own.

Which medical aid package will be a good one to start with ? I think his budged is something in the region of R2000 for a medical aid.

If it is just him by himself then look at the Discovery Keycare packages.
Bryanston has a lot of the doctors and facilities locked into the Keycare system.
He will save a ton of money if he sticks with those approved doctors and facilities...

Thank you for the info. Yes it will just be for himself. He has to budget for everything on his own now and accommodation will not be cheap. He and a friend is currently checking out some places to stay in the Morningside area.

Also have a look at profmed. The more closed/restricted med aids are better in my experience. The more restricted the better...

I'd recommend looking at Momentum's Custom option. Very affordable and with great cover compared to similarly priced plans and even some that are quite a bit more expensive.

If he's quite a healthy fella and only requires a hospital plan, BestMed's Beat 1 is his answer

Hey Guys

Any update on the best option for 2018 ?

Currency on discovery classic saver which is average for its price.

Very healthy only medical concern is contact lenses a chronic nose spray which stupid medial aids doesn't cover, probably going to opt for a hospital plan

Convenient thread necro - I'm also looking for a new medical aid.

Me + wife, neither has medical issues or chronics.

Trying to decide between Discovery Essential Saver, Smart Essential or Essential Classic. In the latter two the main difference seems to be the 200% agreed rate cover. How important would that be in most situations?

Essential Saver for the Savings Account might be worth it. Those yearly checkups and twice a year cold's do add up...

I’ve had 5+ out of hospital visits this year and still had to pay around 15/20% on top of the 200% paid by Discovery, on classic saver.

It was around 5k for everything. I have yet to see a specialist charging less than 200%.

I’m changing for a classic comprehensive next year but if I didn’t have a condition declared this year, I would have reduced.

I just upped my plan to classic saver for next year cause the baby extractor doctor charges the 200% discovery health rate.. had i not changed, i had to pay a 5k out out of pocket deposit 15 weeks before birth plus whatever co-payment was left after the birth.. who has that kinda cash hanging around right after xmas....
