Which Modem?

PCMCIA or "USB Modem for laptops and desktops" ? Are they any different?

I have and use a laptop - but may purchase a desktop in future so I'm thinking of going for the USB for laptops and desktops.

The PCMCIA can only be used on laptops but is beter for mobility, because it sticks into your laptop adn stays there by itself. But it also has worse "reception" or signal strength.

If you will get a PC later the USB might be a good idea, but if you dont wat the Iburst on the move, then a UTD (desktop modem) with a router to share the connection to all PC's inside your house might be a better idea. It has the best signal.

get the desktop mobem if you only going to use it at home.

desktop units get a better signal than the laptop units. and dont get the omni antenna !!!!!!!!!
if you want a external antenna rather get the directional one ..

Before you commit yourself to the Access Card you better get the reseller to prove that it will work well enough from your location since it's power outout is lower than the Access Bridge UTD unit.

Also bear in mind if you need an external antenna the lead from the antenna to the modem should be as short as posible which could be a pain with the Access Card.

As a matter of interrest or not, I have already run my UTD in a car using a dc to dc converter and it worked fine as long as we were within range of the base station.

hmmm. thast interesting, but its limited to a car the point of USB or PCMCIA is that you get your power from a PC or laptop, so its totally portable.

Anyway, the portability with ibust should be alot better in JHB with all their towers, but once a few more come out in Cape Town, well even already if you look at the coverage map, youd be surprised at how much is already covered, almost anywhere I'd want to go theres signal.
