So I have a new little media player in my lounge and am sharing all my TV shows, movies and music with it through my wireless network which works great. Problem is my PC is very far away and 720p occasionally stutters and I don't want to keep my PC on whenever I want to stream stuff.

So I'm looking at getting a NAS.

Requirements for me are: SMB, Gigabit LAN, quiet, 4TB+ capacity (although I'm gonna be buying diskless).

Any recommendations?

You say that you have a media player? What make, model? NAS will set you back some $$$ and you don't really need it.

I have a Boxee Box that I bought from the US as my media player. http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DSM-38...E07O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298575411&sr=8-1

I know what the price of NAS boxes are but I've never really needed one until now. A DIY NAS is also outta the question since I don't have the time.

Esquire apparently sells the Freecom NAS...seems perfect for a grand with 2 bays and lots of features but the guys there don't know when they'll get stock...they don't actually know much at all.

So...what do you suggest then?

Seagate BlackArmor

Get the 400-series and buy your own (seagate) disks, or buy the fully kitted 440. I bought the 420 at a Rectron distributor for about R4k. Best no-mess, no-fuss storage investment I ever made. The automatic notification is stellar and it also allows you to access content on it when you're away from home. Works well in a pinch. Hotswap bays means you never mess around with a screwdriver either.

Like all NAS devices in this class, it can't fully use the gigabit connection - I peak at around 300Mbits/sec using SMB/CIFS and around 550Mbits/sec using straight FTP. Never tested it's NFS exports.

IMO the BlackArmor is one of the best I've seen. Sexy look, quiet, easy to use and easy to replace drives.

I take it the entry level 4 series is the 400?

Where can I buy it directly from? I'm not a business or anything so can't buy from Rectron..

You might have to buy it from a dealer on the forums. You should get a decent price. I'd offer but I'm in CPT

Um, there's always shipping?

If you had to sell me an entry level diskless 400 series unit, how much would you charge?

Also, if I had to get it through a dealer here, do I just post in the Request section?

YGPM

Yes, you would post it in the request section. I'd recommend someone but I don't know members from Pretoria.

I recently bought a Western Digital Sharespace NAS server with 4 X 1TB Drives for about R4800.
Using it at home mainly for movies and it works like a charm.
