Haven't done NNTP in quite a number of years, and was looking at the SAIX news server today and it appears have improved a lot since I last used it about five years ago.

I used to use Forte's Agent and am testing out their 30 day trial, but it seems about two years out of date.

What do you recommend?

Free is best, but if I have to pay a few dollars I don't mind either.

Sabnzbd is your best bet http://sabnzbd.org/ it just works flawlessly.

But if your interested in a reader (as in reading text news) I was using Grabbit, but considering that 99.99999999% of news on NNTP is spam I wont even bother.

Sabnzbd is a bit of pain to set up but once it works its rock solid and does some truelly great things in the background like auto merging files, Par repairing and extracting(Zip support) if its required.

Not to mention it runs a webserver and uses http or https to access its interface so with a bit of tinkering (using Dyndns and opening the correct port on your router) you can remotely access it from anywhere in the world as long as you have a internet connection.

Its by far the best at the moment.

sabnzbd appears to set up a local web server, not really happy with that, could cause all sorts of consternation.

Am I missing something?

Sorry, posted before I saw your reply. Would prefer not to have a web-server based solution.

Grabbit is your next best bet, but its about on par with Forte's Agent though...

Any reason why you dont want to have a webserver running?

I am already running IIS on the box and I am not sure how this might interfere with that, and it is an additional security risk which I really don't need in my life.

I will read up on it first and take it from there. Thanks for the suggestions though.

That makes sense , you can try grabbit as a alternative :)

alt.binz has way more features than Grabit, and they are both nice little proggies. But both Grabit and Alt.binz still crash on me fairly often.

sabnzbd is the best. It just does what it is supposed to do.
