So th time has finally come when the company has agreed to upgrade my laptop.

they have suggested a budget of R12K give or take a few rands.... not going to push my luck here so will say +1K tops.

Facts to consider:

1 My current HP with i3 processor and 2 GB ram is dying with my huge spreadsheets and stuff. often freeezing and crashing.

2 It will probably be never that i get an upgrade again

3 to shut me up they letting me choose.... anything wrong after will be my own doing

4 I want an i7 and 8gb ram

5 cos i work with numbers and spreadsheets - needs to have a numberpad (102 keyboard)

not a must but would like something with a backlit keyboard for those late nights when the wife is sleeping and i work in bed

this is what i was considering:

Toshiba S50T-A0382 Core i7 15.6" Notebook with Touch Screen - Core i7-4700MQ, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, NVIDIA N14P-GV2-S Graphics, Numeric Keypad, Windows 8.

it is within price range - just to find a reliable supplier

any other recommendations with similar spec?

I've got an HP on the extended desktop setting with a large screen as my main display. I'm also a heavy spreadsheet user and my computer copes. Running i3(23.......m processor), windows 7 32 bit with 4 gig ram.

The dual screens makes all the difference in my productivity.

i7 sounds like overkill.

I'm pretty much in the same situation with regards getting a new laptop for work - I've found a really nice one that ticks all the boxes in terms of specs, and takes it a step further actually - the Asus G56JR - its the latest Asus Republic of Gamers laptop, http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/G56JR/ its a fantastic looking machine, all the specs you'd possibly need (barring an SSD), comes bundled with a ROG backpack, mouse & headset, oh, and an additional external Sub for your own personal pleasure :p They're retailing at approximately R14.5k - but I'm sure you could explain the additional money on the extras (I'd leave the Sub part out though...) :D

I'm sitting with a R20k nvidia door stop.
Go for AMD graphics, nvidia's optimus is ****e.
Between it and dx11 most games have issues on my lappy.
Some cannot start due to crashing, some cannot run full screen
Google "nvidia optimus issues" and see here

You have been warned...

You'd probably want something with an SSD too?

As per your numpad problems, you get attachable numpads, so don't break the bank to find a custom solution on that.

Perhaps you're looking at something in the range of:

i5-i7
6-8GB RAM
80-150GB SSD
Perhaps even a good graphics card might help (not too sure on that one).

SSD would be a bonus. Definitely i7 cos it will be a long time before I get an upgrade again.

SSD is a must, more important than that i7 IMHO.
Your i7 will just sit idling whilst waiting on the HDD to deliver, like a ferrari with tractor tyres.

I'll rather take the i5 + SSD than i7 with spindle any day.

Duno what you want the lappy for but
I can run eclipse, visual studio, flash builder, database server, numerous chrome tabs, IE etc at the same time and the CPU is mostly idle. But I'm amazed when someone else launches visual studio and it takes forever to start up.

Completely agree with this, SSD is the single best upgrade I ever did to my laptop. With a normal drive it was slower than a colleagues (at least) 5 year old HP, with a Centrino Duo, (mine is an Asus Vivobook with an i7) and now with an SSD it flies. Rather go i5 with SSD over i7 with a normal drive.

I cannot for the life of me see spreadsheets bogging down an i3. You have other issues here, format & reinstall. Office apps are simply not major cpu resource users. When using office apps one would generally not notice major differences between a current laptop and one from 5 yrs ago.

Did LandmarkPC suddenly get their new stock on these new ASUS ROG laptops? Last time I enquired they were still awaiting the new stock and indicated during first week of May 2014.
