Apols if this has been asked - I searched the forum and found nothing.

I'm looking to get an OBD2 adapter for checking cars, ideally something that attaches to an Android phone.

I know there's a wide range of products and prices and quality, and want to get a reasonably good one that has a decent app.

Any recommendations?

I happen to be in the US and this is mainly for checking cars for family. I'd also like to use it in SA.

Do you have any experience with OBD2 adapters that use a phone or laptop? Which would you recommend?

I can't speak for American cars but those cheap little bluetooth OBD2 works fine on every car I tested it on except mine which uses KKL instead of OBD2. Newer cars also use EOBD and CAN bus. If you just want to see the codes look at Konnwei handheld units. If you want to go beyond OBD2 the advanced software only works with specific vehicle makes and needs proprietary hardware dongles to work. If you want something in the middle look at OBD2 Shop and their Software. I bought the USB cable from them.

It depends on the car. Mercedes dealers sell such an adaptor for their pre-2017 models and I am sure other dealerships have something similar
